anyone know what even the budget on this thing is? I looks like something that coulda cost close to 100M, but the effects look really cheap so I wouldn't be surprised either if they skimped out on this one and its budget really is something like 30-40

No specific numbers but my guess it not that cheap

The big-budget film is poised to mark the first homegrown project to come from Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 and is expected to play in the Imax 3D format. Shooting is expected to begin later this year or early 2016 in Iceland and Canada.

Sony, which has a deal to release Studio 8 films, will distribute The Solutrean.

Still at the RT top - with the unimaginable 100% Fresh and 8.5 Average rating!! - while bursting out with twice as many new reviews!

Dajk, what the fuck man - of all possible movies this year, this is the most beautiful looking!

Also - have shame, people:

You read this, right?? You should all be supporting new movies like this, even if it costs arm and leg. If you do not - you're just pigs wallowing in the same old Hollywood swill...

I was given the opportunity to see Alpha at a very early press screening back in June. I went into Alpha not knowing what to expect because, in all honesty, the trailer did very little to interest me. I went to see the film reluctantly but ended up enjoying it immensely. Alpha is one of the biggest surprises of the summer movie season and something that I encourage audiences to take a chance and see. I feel like the marketing team at Sony had no idea how to market this film, and I can understand why because it is mostly an independent film but with a studio budget.

what the critics have to say...

So will this turn out to be actual good movie that was tanked by awful marketing?

It might...and it's not just awful marketing, but it's misdirected marketing combined with a bad opening strategy (coming out now in such a tight market when so many other premier concepts are all dropping at the same time...you wish someone had done a "Baby Driver" like last year and slipped one of these premier concepts into the early sequel heavy summer, rather than back-ending them all to August)...

Looks like it will end up fresh.

Sony is such a mess some times. A movie like this shouldn't be opening under $10 million. I think there's an audience for this but they made no effort.

There were a bunch of Sony movies last year that I also feel should have done significantly more than they did, including Life which was also well reviewed, had 3 popular stars and a good premise, but only did $30 million domestic.

Yet the studio pulled the shocker that was Jumanji. I don't understand how it made that much money.
