Valonqar
That's a possibility. SC would be in its second week on Sep 17 and third on Sep 24 if Dune's to move in either slot domestically. I don't know if it ever happened that a movie opened overseas a full month ahead of domestic release. usually a week tops but a month? Also, it would be shown at the festivals by Sep 17 so buzz would be hot.

Valonqar
Ah, OK. So we'll see. F9 obviously wasn't hurt by it but it didn't have HBO Max either. Any idea how big/small is Dune book overseas? Read somewhere that it wasn't as big/known as LOTR for example. Closer to Agatha Christie in terms of notoriety. Not as big as Potter but that's understandable.
MrPink
Are all these countries listed the ones where HBO Max does not exist? Entirely possible that they launch it early so that HBO Max doesn't eat into its grosses there and then releasing in October for the rest of us
DInky
F9 was released a month early only in some Asian markets though. Dune, however, would be released early all over Europe. I don't think this will do big numbers in China (if they don't care about Star Wars then they won't care about an older, more obscure version of Star Wars) so by the time it releases in NA we should already have a good idea what its international total will be. A month-long head start is still pretty unusual though.

WittyUsername
There is no way that Dune is bigger than LotR in the U.K. I can only assume that AJG is messing around. Edited August 18, 2021 by WittyUsername
babz06
I've already accepted the fact that this wont fulfill its potential at the BO. WB have already written their year off with this HBOmax strategy and Dune will be lucky to make more than 30m+ on OW. Making more than The Suicide Squad will be seen as win at this point. Maggie
hmmmmm Colligan, who spent years as a studio executive before joining Imax, is confident about the slate of movies scheduled to arrive in the fall and winter months. She’s particularly excited about “Dune” (“An unbelievable visual achievement,” she says) and “Top Gun: Maverick” (“It’s like being on an amusement park ride with Tom Cruise”). https://variety.com/2021/film/features/dune-top-gun-maverick-theaters-delta-variant-1235043993/

Coming from him, i think the description is only fitting his interests.
ThomasNicole
Another festival in the basket. Seems like Warner will put it in the whole awards circuit, which means they are REALLY confident on it's potential.
DInky
Now we know which of the two movies Scorsese won't be seeing.
lorddemaxus
This is going to all 4 Fall fests now (although NYFF isn't as important as the main trio). I think only other film this year also going to all 4 is Power of the Dog.
Valonqar
Hmmm the festival runs from Sep 24 to Oct 10 so it looks like USA release remains Oct 22. They usually run the festival circuit before the theatrical release no?
