He proved with the Arrival not only that he gets the cerebral part of the story but that he doesn't let obligatory spectacle stand in the way or overwhelm it. This is an excellent news assuming the studio won't chicken out of some themes (jihad) and try to sanitize it a la Golden Compass.

Remember CHINA owns legendary, so they will have their say. Dennis is brilliant, but until now he wasn't involved with a movie that's supposed to launch a franchise. BR2 is an independent art house big budget R rated sequel, but that's all. There is no pressure there to make a franchise out of it. Although I am sure deep down the producers would love it to become one. With DUNE, the pressure will be on to deliver an amazing film that spawns a successful new franchise. Problem with Dune is that books just aren't that engaging after Children of Dune (and some will argue that only Dune is the good one). So if the idea is to make Atreides into Legendary's Skywalkers, they'll have to make shit up beyond God Emperor of Dune cause direct descendants are no more big players and the hero is many gholas/clones of Duncan Idaho. I stopped reading once they weren't about the family and am not hearing good things about Herbert son's writing. Also, I don't see how they can make Dune book into one movie. I'd say 2 would be optimal. There are too many characters but most of them are not Tom Bombadil-like easy write-outs. And there are too many complicated politics and world building for just one. This is the case where split would be justified.
Merkel
Brian Herbert's books are below prequel-bad. They are absolutely atrocious
UTJeff
The Dune books aren't action-adventure serials like Star Wars. The actual material doesn't make for fun popcorn lovin' fare. IMHO, the best thing you can do is something like Game of Thrones and go from there. Mainstream audiences aren't going to go for Dune unless they butcher the books and completely change everything and make it more palatable for audiences. I'm not saying Denis Villeneuve is incapable of making a great Dune adaptation. I just think a faithful one, even if it's faithful to the books, wouldn't be well received by audiences. Dune isn't a battle against good and evil. Even the first book's hero, Paul Atreides performs a lot of questionable acts. The so-called heroes operate in a lot of grey areas. Dementeleus
Make a franchise out of DUNE alone. Use LOTR as your template. There's enough meat there to comfortably fill a trilogy: Dune 1 - House Atreides takes control of Arrakis, is betrayed, and falls to the Harkonnens. The movie ends with Jessica and Paul escaping into the desert. Dune 2 - Paul finds and becomes part of the Fremen and begins his path of growing into a leader. Dune 3 - Paul, leader of the Fremen, leads them on a rebellion against the Harkonnens and the greater Empire at large.
Hatebox
I'm a Lynch fanatic but find Dune too much a slog to get through in one sitting. Although I'm surprised Villeneuve is doing this straight after BR 2049 I welcome it.

Dementeleus
1 hour ago, Goffe said: Not sure what to think, I know nothing about Dune... It's extremely broad and epic, with a detailed universe like Star Wars, but also surprisingly intimate and filled with lots of political intrigue. The universe is ruled by an Emperor who presides over a group of royalty, most of whom have been gifted with planets to rule (much like dukedoms and baronies, etc). However, the only thing that enables faster-than-light journeys (in effect, folding space for instant travel) is a drug made from a rare spice found only on one planet, the desert planet called Arrakis. The Empire depends on controlling both the extraction and processing of the spice. As a reward for their loyalty to the Emperor, the Royal House Atreides is given control of Arrakis. However, their mortal enemies, House Harkonnen, also want Arrakis for their own. There are also other important organizations that wish to control various aspects of Arrakis or the various political powers: the Spacing Guild, whose navigators consume the spice and effectively control all space travel; the Bene Gesserit, a sisterhood of "witches" -- women who've trained themselves in such physical and mental prowess that others feel they have superpowers; the Mentats, who are essentially human computers; etc. The story basically is about House Atreides striving to take control of Arrakis, with young Paul Atreides, son of the Duke, as the protagonist. edit: aw shit, might as well let Princess Irulan do the explaining...
