yep, budget is really a big roadblock for this cause it's gonna be big but the material and Villeneuve style are not GA friendly. this ain't no 4 quadrant.

Big gamble is fine but since they are making 2 movies, all depends on the first one which is a tougher sell. The second one is more of a traditional blockbuster with romance, sandworm-riding, and all out war. Which is why many fans find that part of the book inferior to earlier stuff (that makes the first movie). I can see them release the first, that flops and then make a streaming event out of the second.

Sometimes I wonder if this would’ve benefited better from a Netflix or HBO 10-episode season.

Sy Fy made a mini series out of Dune/Dune Messiah/Children of Dune and, IMO, it worked better than Lynch movie that I watched for days (lots of intermissions) on YT since it was so boring. So I think you are right.

Lynch's movie, with all its flaws, is still vastly superior to the miniseries, IMHO

it was more focused on the book philosophy while the mini as more focused on soap opera. that said, movie, IMO, made a mistake of trying to keep exact dialog from the book, which is too stilted for cinema. As Harrison Ford said, you can write that shit, George, but you can't say it. I think it's the movie's biggest problem, how stilted everything is. it works in the book but book's not the same medium as cinema.

they can afford it thanks to Aquaman and other profitable movies. I always liked WB for taking expensive risks even when they don't pan out financially (MMFR, BR2049, etc). The studio clearly won't steer clear of risky projects since they make up on other projects and are overall friendly to creativity.

Well, they probably see Villeneuve as a Nolan-esque long term investment and we all know that Nolan ended up paying huge dividends even though his first couple of big films didn't do super business (Batman Begins, The Prestige). It only took one project to turn Nolan into a superstar director who can make buttloads of money in pretty much any genre. They probably see this as Villeneuve's potential.
