Ant-Man and the Wasp probably would've benefitted more had they actually broadened the scope from the first movie like they did with Thor: Ragnarok (which was clearly a much more distinctive outing than either of the previous two Thor movies) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As it stands it's clearly looking to be a minor (lol) entry in the Marvel canon compared to their obvious big guns.

The thing is that it’s anothet CBM flavor and the sequel looks quite a bit bigger than the original and , when all is said and done, it’s worldwide box office take will compare very favorably with winter soldier  and maybe even Thor 3.

I do think that’s a good point.  How much of TWS bump was from being post Avengers/normal sequel bump, and how much of it comes from being apart of an extended universe.

The sequels that jumped the most had the most crossover with the universe as a whole

Ragnarok jumped much more than TDW and featured Hulk and other extended universe tie-ins

The highest grossing captain America movies scale based on amount of crossover

Prior to Homecoming, Spidey was in danger of going under 200m DOM.  Homecoming had an Iron Man crossover

GOTG2 had a smaller increase over the first one compared to other sequels, no crossover in that one

Iron Man 3 is the one big exception, but it was the first follow up to the Avengers with the most popular hero (at the time).  Iron Man 2, however, decreased from the first as well, with only a fraction of extended universe stuff (but no real crossover)

Marvel has kind of been advertising this one as fairly isolated.  The Wasp is a new character, so I wouldn’t really count her as crossover.

If crossovers is a big driving factor to build excitement then I could see its change from the original ant-Man being a little more muted compared to Ragnarok or TWS.

In addition to the post Avengers bump the overall not just o/w bumps also came  from having very good to excellent movies with the reviews to match - and by being better than their previous films.

TWS, THOR:R , SM:HC and yes IM3 are all better than their prior films.   Were new character interactions or supporting casts part of them being better and/or fresher?  Maybe - but IM2 had that (with the same BW and Fury that were there for TWS though not done nearly as well) and not IM3.  Yet IM3 was a much better movie and made far more money (though it was aided by the addition of 3D which made it adjusted higher even than IM1)

I think GOTG2 was better than GOTG but that wasn't the critical or audience consensus.  So while the o/w was about 50% higher the end total was about 18% higher (and less than 4% adjusted for inflation).

IM2 and TDW also had healthy o/w jumps of about 30%  but in the end IM2's total was slightly under IM1 (and almost 12% less adjusted) and TDW  with an added post Avengers bump finished just 14% ahead of of Thor 1 (less than 10% adjusted) because of lesser comparative quality not because they didn't have more universe tie ins (which IM2 had).

AM&TW had an uncharacteristic Tues drop but a huge 85% Wed bump - even bigger than JW2's 82% bump though it till lags in overall sales.

That just might be the out of the ordinary holiday week impacting when people are buying tickets and/or that it's also much more walk up driven like JW2

Pelham had the then added large Travolta salary - also the train parts were rather expensive.   Equalizer is one star film on a physically smaller scale.

Ant-Man should lead Pulse very clearly now. Almost every sold ticket is an Ant-Man and the Wasp ticket. I tried to count them several times for 1 minute, didn't work, too many...

By the way I also saw several buyings for M: I 6 in California (not the first sold tickets for that movie of course but this time very regularly).

Tonight at my theater for Ant-Man:

6:00: 50/113

7:00 3D: 18/78

8:30: 0/124

9:00: 32/113

9:45: 0/67

10:00 3D: 0/78

Total: 100/573

The 8:30 and 9:45 shows were just added minutes ago.

Comps (all final sales unless noted😞

9% of Infinity War (23.2M) (15 shows)

20% of Black Panther (40.4M) (9 shows)

21% of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (31.1M) (10 shows)

24% of Deadpool 2 (30.1M) (8 shows)

25% of Solo (21.1M) (9 shows)

30% of Thor: Ragnarok (36.8M) (6 shows)

31% of Justice League (29.1M) (6 shows)

31% of Incredibles 2 (56.6M) (4 shows)

So far this looks pretty good given it'll be more walkup based.
