The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

This movie is interesting to track and I thought that a newer horror film Friday comp could be helpful this autumn (I wish I would have tracked Old etc. too).
Candyman counted today at 8am EST for today:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 309 (10 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
91 (9 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 53 (9 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9):
9 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11):
80+ (9 showtimes, 2 reported Sell Outs, I doubt that they are true but can also not rule them out)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 157 (6 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal):
365 (10 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.064.

Up 62% since yesterday and I guess this is pretty good.
Comps (both times the same 7 theaters and counted on Friday for Friday): Crawl (12.0M OW) had 571 sold tickets and The Grudge (11.4M OW) had 515.
The Crawl comp for Thursday
pointed to 1.7M in the previews and Candyman was doing a bit better. OTOH it's a brand and more preview-heavy. Still, from presales alone the Friday looks pretty good. Of course I'm curious if the walk-ups will stay decent but the RT audience score is not as bad as I would have thought after I read the reactions here.

Shang-Chi counted today at 8am EST for Friday, September 3:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 422 (8 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24):
251 (11 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 43 (10 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9):
16 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11):
17 (4 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 602 (15 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal):
401 (16 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 1.752.

Up 23.5% since last Tuesday.
Comps: TSS had also 7 days before its release Friday 714 sold tickets in the same 7 theaters for Friday (means Shang-Chi = 2.45x TSS at the moment).
Birds of Prey's final Friday number, counted one day before = on Thursday, was 1.664. So Shang-Chi leads already (1.05x) and has 6 days left to increase the margin.

Jacksonville weekend sales by day with comps.  Still looks good over the weekend in presales; personally I have it around 19m based solely on the preview number. Comps indicate over 20m likely with the Thursday to Weekend ratios.

Th Fr Sat Sun Total Comp Prediction
Candyman 406 695 348 88 1,537
Old 181 285 119 48 633 $23,110,374
The Forever Purge 127 163 37 7 334 $25,810,296
Escape Room 2 187 194 65 19 465 $21,215,836

@katnisscinnaplex

Noticed this a couple of nights ago and was hoping it'd go away, but so far it hasn't.  In the last couple of days Cinemark has changed a flag/coding somewhere so that it isn't marking "unavailable" seats anymore over on Fandango.  It isn't for me at any rate.

Before, with a couple of minor exceptions here and there, I was able to figure out easily if a seat at a Cinemark location was truly sold on Fandango or was an unavailable seat (like a DBOX one or a broken seat) using your "map_seat unavailable"/"map_seat reserved" HTML search trick.

You might have already noticed this yourself when it comes to Cinemark on Fandango, or it might just be local to me, but I thot I should mention it in case you wanted to check some of your Cinemark theaters on Fandango where you know you have an unavailable seat.

NB:  This is separate from the difficulties Menor was having over in the Cinemark corp site and only started showing up since Wed night or so.

I'm glad you pointed it out, I've been manually removing those for the last few days as well. I keep a list of total and unavailable seats for each of the auditoriums I track so it makes it a little easier to confirm against those.

I have no comps on this (I only grabbed Widow on its last day), but I just did a quick search of Shang Chi, since my area tends to be a weird mix of urban and rural.

Portsmouth Regal:

125/736 = 16.98% sold

6PM RPX - 69/251

9PM RPX - 34/251

630 STD - 17/93

930 STD - 5/93

915 3D - 0/48

Falmouth Flagship:

71.15% sold

6:45 STD - 74/107

From what I know of pre-COVID days around my area, this is selling fine.  The issue is the lack of screenings IMO.  Normally we should have double this.

Shang-Chi (Local Regal, NYC)

57/1402  (5:45pm 8/20/21)
78/1402 (4pm 8.22.21)
78/1402 (4pm 8.23.21)
112/1402 (8pm 8.24.21)
125/1402 (6:45pm 8.26.21)
144/1402 (6:45pm 8.27.21)

The closest BW comp I have is for Monday opening week - three days later.  239/3584.   SC is currently already 60% of that ($7.95m)  but as @Cap pointed out there is a major difference in the amount of screenings and seats.

Shang Chi Previews (T-7)

MTC1  - 53740/390845 902746.82 2082 shows

MTC2(DBOX Adjusted) - 26500/329881 406902.66 2135 shows

As I posted yesterday pace of MTC1 ~ 2x MTC2 at this point.

Shang Chi Previews(T-6)

MTC1  - 56887/399085 952003.09 2138 shows

MTC2(DBOX Adjusted)  - 28385/330124 ~400K 2134 shows

so This is about 21 hours of data. BW in MTC1 was selling about 5.5K per day at this time. My predictions still stand(7-8m previews).

This made me wonder how far behind BW in # of shows it is.  Another report I run weekly on Friday mornings is for the weekend's showtimes in a sample of around 4500 theaters.   Black Widow ended up with previews in 3,109 of those theaters and 23,129 showings.   Shang-Chi currently has 1,740 theaters with 11,438 shows listed for Thursday.  I'll have an accurate comparison next Friday morning once the full list of shows are up.

CandyMan Friday

MTC1 -  120802/600331 1693365.67 3472 shows

MTC2 -  91452/383267 1227957.77  2537 shows

Really strong run today. MTC1 almost 4x today. MTC2 did gross tad more than 4x today. That said its skewing big markets and looking at how big the MTC ratios were yesterday , let us be conservative. I would say 6.5m friday.

Going very conservative. I am thinking $7.5-7.75M.
