The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

So, um...

Huh.

There's gonna be some sellouts for Fandango Early Access for SLOP2 locally in Sacto.  Using my personal "six seats or fewer left" metric at least.

No it's not showing on the bigger screens in many places.  Still...

Alright, showtimes don't start for about another 2 hours or so.  If I throw out one theater which is massively dragging down the average, I get:

1611/2175 tickets sold (74.07% sold).  22 showings counted.  Four 'virtual' sellouts with another showing knocking on the door (none counted as seats sold, for what it's worth).

If I throw in the massively under-performing (for now theater):

1641/2392 tickets sold (68.60% sold) 23 showings counted.

A different theater is also weighting down the average a bit, as it has one showing at 70% full and three others in the 20 to 40 percent range.

There are eight showings with 15 seats or fewer left.  The dinner and a movie theater that only has 30 to 45 seats per screening is skewing that somewhat with all three of its showings being at virtual sellouts.  And there's only one auditorium that has more than 200 seats.

So it's not like this is getting lots of the huge screens in the area.

Even so there are a fair amount of people locally who are checking the film out it would seem.

(No, I don't have other early access comps - sorry :) )

Not an official look buy any means, but EA SLOP2 finished at:

1696/2392 tickets sold - 70.90% sold (+55)

Since I went right up to showtime, I didn't adjust for 'virtual sellouts'.  There would have been 4 sellouts and 14 more tickets sold, if I had.

With that under-performing theater stripped out, I get:

1649/2175 tickets sold - 75.82% sold (+38).  Same deal on sellouts, natch.

===

I guess that's pretty decent for SLOP2?  Folks were willing to take the worst seats in the house to see the flick.  It did very well in every theater in the region except for one.  Not many showings, of course.  And many of them weren't at the larger capacity auditoriums.  And I suppose Illumination has something of a fanbase.  Still, seems decent enough at least. Be interesting to see what the WOM is coming out of these showings.

Holdover movement consistent with what you’d predict just from the basic kid vs adult composition.

Not doing my count until my usual time but from an eyeball, KoTM surpassed that 15 ticket benchmark I wanted it to do today at my theater and has doubled it's sales from yesterday.

First count of today, just Thursdays-

Godzilla: KoTM-179 (+6), 8 screenings (3 IMAX, 3 3D, 3 Regular) Final week

Dark Phoenix-77 (+3), 6 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening)

Hoping KoTM can keep it's momentum going and hit 15 tickets sold today.

Final count of today, just Thursdays-

Godzilla: KoTM-193 (+20), 8 screenings (3 IMAX, 3 3D, 3 Regular) Final week

Dark Phoenix-77 (+3), 6 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening)

Secret Life of Pets 2-5, 4 screenings (2 3D, 2 Regular)

KoTM had a great day today, doubled it's ticket sales from yesterday. If this pace keeps up then I'm going to be veeery happy. Phoenix is doing...ok I guess. SLoP2 I did on a whim and...oof. I know it's a family movie but only 5 tickets sold 2 weeks out? Not good. In total today Godzilla sold 20 tickets and Phoenix sold 3.

King of the Monsters Greater Sacramento Area Premiere Night Seat Report: T-5 Days and counting

Total Seats Sold Today:                    102

IMO, the best comp of movies I have tracked will be Fallen Kingdom.  I also have comps with the Aladdin and Detective Pikachu as something as a compare/contrast with current May movies.  They may not be as good comps, being in different genres.

Unadjusted Comps

1.0449x as many tickets sold as Detective Pikachu 5 days before release.

0.8953x as many tickets sold as Aladdin 5 days before release.

T-5:

Pika        113 tickets sold  [0 sellouts/62 showings   |   6327/7464 seats left    | 15.23% sold]

Aladdin    66 tickets sold  [0 sellouts/81 showings   | 10066/11393 seats left  | 11.65% sold]

Adjusted Comps

.4941x as many tickets sold as Fallen Kingdom 5 days before release.

ADJUSTMENT NOTE: If a theater locally that is now selling tickets for reserved seating was selling them for the above movies, but as non-reserved seating for that movie, it is not counted toward the ratio of 'as many tickets sold' for the movie in question.  If a theater is brand new to the region and wasn't yet open for one of the above movies, however, it will be counted toward the ratio.  It will also be counted toward the ratio if it was playing in a different number of theaters locally.

T-5:

JW2             124 tickets sold [0 sellouts/111 showings |   9053/11263 seats left   |  19.62% sold]

KotM (JW)    100 tickets sold [0 sellouts/98 showings   | 11080/12172 seats left   |    8.97% sold]

KotM (JW) is the number of tickets sold at the same theaters I had tracking info for Fallen Kingdom.

Do have some thoughts on KotM, both locally and nationally via Fandango.

It's doing pretty well here locally.  A little bit above the internal comps I've been setting inside my head against JW:FK.  I am a little worried that a lot of the growth the last couple of days has been coming from the TrueIMAX theater in town, but it's also starting to show signs of life at other theaters.

All in all though, where it needs to be.  The test for real starts tomorrow though, as that's when JW:FK started to come to life.  I'm not expecting KotM to do 70% to even 66% of JW:FK.  But if it does anywhere from 50% to 60%, it'll be in fine shape.  Whether or not it'll see a bump/ramp up before the review embargo is lifted is anyone's guess.

As for Fandango, at a glance it does seem to be trailing Aladdin slightly day-for-day the last couple of days.  That's not ideal, but it might just be different pre-sale buying pattern and factors at play.  At the same time I can think of at least three separate reasons why Aladdin could have stronger Fri and Sat sales a week before release and it not mattering one jot in the end.  But it is something I will keep an eye on the next couple of days just in case Sacramento is over-performing.

Oh yeah, one final thing.  If TS4 tickets aren't on sale starting Monday or Tuesday I will be very surprised.  Only reason I can think it might be Tue is that Mon is a holiday.

So no rest for the wicked trackers out there, I'm afraid. ;)

Sorry I didn't give out numbers yesterday. I was too tired. Lol. I'll add some theaters to make up for it though. Keep in mind these numbers are over 2 days instead of one.

Only Thursdays

Orange Park AMC

Godzilla KOTM - 150 (+9), 7 screenings (2 IMAX, 1 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Rocketman - 41 (+8), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 1 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 103 (+3), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Disappointed that Godzilla seems to have really slowed down at the beginning of its final week. Still ahead of Aladdin, but only by 12 tickets. To compare with Godzilla's 9 tickets, Aladdin got 26 tickets on these 2 days last week. They better release that embargo soon or I fear for opening weekend.

Regency AMC

Godzilla KOTM - 203 (+31), 10 screenings (3 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 3 Regular)

Rocketman - 26 (+3), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 8 (+3), 5 screenings (2 3D, 3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 150 (+14), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Godzilla had an ok couple of days at Regency but now only leads Aladdin by 1 ticket. Aladdin had 41 tickets sold over these last couple of days compared to KOTMs 31. Dark Phoenix seems to be selling really well which puzzles me.

Epic Theatres at Oakleaf

Godzilla KOTM - 26 (0), 3 screenings (3 Epic XL)

Rocketman - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 4 (0), 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Literally no tickets sold today. Wow.

NewVision 12 at Fleming Island

Godzilla KOTM - 4 (0) , 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Rocketman - 0 (0), 0 screenings

SLOP2 - 0 (0), 0 screenings

Dark Phoenix - 1 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

None here either.

Avenues Regal Cinemas

Godzilla KOTM - 40, 5 screenings (2 3D, 3 Regular)

Rocketman - 10, 2 screenings (2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 16, 5 screenings (1 RPX 2D, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 33, 7 screenings (2 4DX 3D, 1 RPX 2D, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

What a strange theater.

Cinemark Tinseltown

Godzilla KOTM - 130, 6 screenings (1 3D, 3 XD, 2 Regular)

Rocketman - 11, 3 screenings (3 Regular)

SLOP2 - 16, 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 30, 4 screenings (2 3D, 2 Regular)

And that's it. Every other theater in the greater Jacksonville area either doesn't have reserved seating or they do but only sell them the week of.

Only Thursdays

Orange Park AMC

Godzilla KOTM - 171 (+21), 7 screenings (2 IMAX, 1 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Rocketman - 40 (-1), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 1 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 103 (0), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Godzilla had a fantastic day and is back to a 20 ticket lead on Aladdin. A terrible day for everyone else though as Rocketman lost a ticket, and SLOP2 and Dark Phoenix sold zilch. Also, Dark Phoenix has now fallen behind Godzilla even with the populated fan screening.

Regency AMC

Godzilla KOTM - 219 (+16), 10 screenings (3 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 3 Regular)

Rocketman - 27 (+1), 3 screenings (1 Dolby, 2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 8 (0), 5 screenings (2 3D, 3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 163 (+13), 8 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 Dolby, 2 3D, 2 Regular, 1 Fan Event)

Godzilla had another ok day and has fallen behind Aladdin by 2. Dark Phoenix is selling like hotcakes here for some reason. It is 24 ahead of where Godzilla was.

Epic Theatres at Oakleaf

Godzilla KOTM - 28 (+2), 3 screenings (3 Epic XL)

Rocketman - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 4 (0), 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 0 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

Nothing to see here. Godzilla is behind Aladdin by 27 tickets here.

NewVision 12 at Fleming Island

Godzilla KOTM - 4 (0) , 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Rocketman - 0 (0), 0 screenings

SLOP2 - 0 (0), 0 screenings

Dark Phoenix - 1 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

These little theater presales are bumming me out man.

Avenues Regal Cinemas

Godzilla KOTM - 40 (0), 5 screenings (2 3D, 3 Regular)

Rocketman - 10 (0), 2 screenings (2 Regular)

SLOP2 - 16 (0), 5 screenings (1 RPX 2D, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 33 (0), 7 screenings (2 4DX 3D, 1 RPX 2D, 2 3D, 2 Regular)

0 Thursday tickets sold today. And it's a fairly big theater. Smh.

Cinemark Tinseltown

Godzilla KOTM - 139 (+9), 6 screenings (1 3D, 3 XD, 2 Regular)

Rocketman - 15 (+4), 3 screenings (3 Regular)

SLOP2 - 16 (0), 3 screenings (3 Regular)

Dark Phoenix - 30 (0), 4 screenings (2 3D, 2 Regular)

*It's something meme*

So, overall it was a meh day for ticket sales. The AMCs really dominate the presales in this area. A little disturbed by Godzilla's presales at Epic but we'll see what happens in the coming week. It's only on the PLF screens there so that might have something to do with Aladdin's large lead. Elsewhere, Godzilla is killing it at Orange Park and about even with Aladdin at Regency. Hopefully ticket sales really pick up this week. I NEED THE MONSTERVERSE TO CONTINUE!

Happy to see Godzilla is still doing well. Finally get to see it Thursday night (in New Zealand so there was no early showings for me :(). Hope it surprises tracking wise like both Godzilla 2014 and Kong Skull Island.

Also speaking of Godzilla 2014 just re-watched it and I love that movie soo much the sense of scale in the film is insane, hope I love KoTM just as much.

Godzilla 2014 holds up so well, a real sense of awe, a mood, an atmosphere, Edwards killed it, the flatness of some of the main characters isn't enough to derail the rest of the film, it's just a film that works with a real vision. KoTM should be that times 100 and what looks to be a more intriguing and cool story. That said, Godzilla 14 was imo the perfect introduction, we wouldn't be here without Gareth.

Movie/Date Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday

Godzilla 1,217 1,187 1,400 1,125 1,098 1,047

Spider-Man FFH 416 364 391 237 211 173
  43 days 42 days 41 days 40 days 39 days 38 days

Godzilla

Last 7 Days (12-6)

101% of John Wick 3 (57.3M) (Day 12 is excluded)

52% of Fallen Kingdom (76.5M)

Days 18-6

49% of Fallen Kingdom (72.9M)

145% of John Wick 3 (82.5M) (Days 14-12 are excluded. Endgame deflation also occurred)

Day 23-6

34% of Fallen Kingdom (50.1M)

So I actually managed to look into the archives and found Fallen Kingdom #s from Fandango. And using that comp, it tells a different story (the 23-6 is mainly because Fallen Kingdom had a higher initial start, and Godzilla didn't get its "official" announcement until two days later). This would be a great opening, though we'll see what happens when it comes to the last few days.

Pets 2

Last 7 Days (19-13)

76% of Grinch (51.4M)

175% of Hotel 3 (77.2M)

Days 25-13

70% of Grinch (47.3M)

213% of Hotel 3 (93.8M)

The Grinch and Hotel comps tell completely different stories, and I don't know which one to believe just yet. Grinch is Illumination, so that seems like the one to follow. But HT3 is a sequel to a franchise that's probably not all that pre-sales driven. Hopefully next week is more clear

I was hoping to get numbers for Venom or Aquaman and use them for Dark Phoenix, but I sadly couldn't get around to it. Maybe when I have my whole week update

Considering that movies in the pre-sale stage drop on Friday and Saturday, those seem like really good holds for Godzilla.

So are we looking at between a $50-85 million OW for KOTM?

First count of today, just Thursdays-

Godzilla: KoTM-196 (+3), 8 screenings (3 IMAX, 3 3D, 3 Regular) Final week

Dark Phoenix-81 (+4), 6 screenings (1 IMAX, 2 3D, 2 Regular+Fan Screening)
