The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

The screen space scramble on wss's third wknd is going to be insane. Just when you would want holiday legs to be kicking in

At smaller theaters yeah but at multiplexes it should hold on just fine (unless it completely flops and somehow opens to less than Dear Evan Hansen two weeks prior). Spider-Man, The Matrix, Sing 2, and maybe The King's Man are the only movies that would require more than one screen, while Nightmare Alley, American Underdog, and A Journal for Jordan will likely be content with just a single screen everywhere (especially when they fall under the same "audience for these movies isn't coming back to theaters" umbrella) and everything from November will be on the way out regardless. We'll see if they go through with that plan to expand Licorice Pizza to 2,000 theaters, I doubt they will.

As I said before, West Side Story can't spawn a franchise or be easily turned into a theme park ride, so Disney will just let it die. It's sad, but you all know I'm right.

Serious question: what do you have in mind that look like not "letting it die." Cause I think it's going to die but I feel like the issue lies more with the greenlight (plus some unfortunate actor luck) than release decisions per se.

Mentioned this in the Oscar thread a few weeks ago but unless Ansel's accuser (or others) comes back to press charges, and that seems unlikely, his controversy (which was barely reported on in the press when it happened due to the dubious nature in which the accusations were dropped) is unlikely to impact the movie in any way. In this day and age when there's actual craziness going on in the world it's hard for tabloid scandals to really stick. Doesn't seem to have impacted his hireability (certainly not when compared to all the other people this year who were dropped by everyone following scandals) since he's been busy shooting the Michael Mann HBO Max show.

As it stands, WSS' biggest problems are that the primary audience for it isn't coming back to theaters and young crowds are unlikely to care for an adaptation/remake of a Romeo & Juliet-inspired musical about singing and dancing gangs with little starpower (Ansel's the closest thing to a name among the main actors but he's hardly an A-lister while everyone else doesn't have many credits that would make them familiar to the general public), even with the hook of one of our greatest living directors tackling such an iconic title.

Multiplexes aren't going to have issues with WSS' screen space. Any 12plex+ is going to keep it, and LP/Journal for Jordan/Nightmare Alley's TCs are going to be on the lower end for Christmas releases which will let smaller theaters keep WSS. If anything, the onslaught of releases hurts Sing and Matrix's screen space vs NWH.

It seems like the Marcus Theaters in my state have bought back morning matinees (ie 10 am to 12 pm showings), which is good as they are the biggest theaters in my state. I’m not sure if this is just for the Thanksgiving weekend but this is a good thing for the upcoming Christmas slate at my theater especially Sing 2, Matrix 4, and of course No Way Home. This is a good thing as it allows more showings for films. Anyone else’s theaters bringing back matinees?

Bad news John. I am not able to track MTC1 at this point. So no data from me.

Either @Menor or myself can post MTC2 data. Let me take a look later today.

I do have Ghostbusters data from yesterday, forgot to post but it didn't look too much different from the previous day. Will post it tonight with pace and comps.

TBF, Cats had pretty good legs and made almost the same amount than In The Heights and Evan Hansen combined DOM

No it did not. In the Heights grossed more domestically. Pandemic, HBO Max and all to contend with on top.
