The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Does anyone know what Focus' expansion plan for Darkest Hour is? I know they plan on having it "wide" December 22 but am curious if they're expanding it before then.

If it goes wide on the 22nd, then I presume it may have a slow expansion. Will probably push towards the 200 theater mark around December 8, maybe?

Anyway, glad that Coco is starting to ramp up in the tracking. Reception so far indicates much stronger (and much less divisive) wom than The Good Dinosaur, plus the epic performance in Mexico indicates buzz from hispanic moviegoers, so.... I'm not expecting Moana numbers, obviously, but it always pains me when Pixar movies underperform (hell, deep down, I was rooting for Cars 3 a little bit), and I don't want another TGD - especially since Pixar needs a boost of confidence now after the Lasseter scandal.

I'm guessing they're waiting to see how it does this weekend.

Yeah, keeping Daddy's Home 2 on two screens and not getting Roman Israel or Lady Bird is going to pay off very well.

To be fair, I don't think it would matter if they had gotten Roman Israel. It's projected to make $5M over the 5-day frame.

Still, keeping 2 screens for DH2 just because it had 2 last week is very dumb. That extra screen could've gone to Wonder or Thor.

Is it a coincidence that a movie about the afterlife and the Dia de los Muertos has 666 seats avaliable?

I really don't get how DH2 managed to lose far less screens than Thor 3 let alone how it's managed to keep 2 screens at a theater.

Last update for Coco and Event Picture Roman Israel, less than 1.5 hours before showtime.

Coco 675 2327 29.01%
Roman Israel 9 1491 0.60%

Coco's 7 PM Tuesday show is nearly filled, while Wednesday has a sold out showing at 6. Every other day's doing pretty good as well.

I'll likely give further updates on both movies on both Wednesday and Thursday morning.

Taking out the Tuesday previews:

Coco 727 2185 33.27%
Roman Israel 30 1420 2.11%

Most of Coco's boost came from today, with another sold-out show, for obvious reasons. Thursday and Sunday are pretty much the same.

Posted this in the TLJ thread, but in case anyone was interested here, courtesy of Deadline: http://deadline.com/2017/11/star-wars-the-last-jedi-200-million-opening-1202213679/

Unaided awareness – that part of movie polling which indicates how powerful a film property is among those who aren’t prodded to mention a pic’s title in a survey — is at 35 to Force Awakens’ 36. It’s a telling stat that tells studios how much non-fans are aware of a pic’s property, and depending on how a movie scores here, they’ll spend ad dollars specifically to make this quadrant grow. First choice is 23 for the Rian Johnson-directed sequel versus 22 for the previous J.J. Abrams title, while definite interest is 65 to 60.  Total awareness is huge at 94 to Force Awakens‘ 92.

So by all measures it's tracking higher than force awakens, but no one is willing to assign it a higher number than force awakens (which is wise IMO, I'd bet on it opening lower as well). The nuts and bolts are interesting, when the numbers get bigger the uncertainty is higher as well.
