Been catching highlights from the Independent Spirit Awards yesterday and apparently this wasn't staged what the actual fuck. Award shows really need to work on finding hosts who truly know how to work a room full of stars because folks like Hasan Minhaj and Jerrod Carmichael are clearly just not it.

This show show you've never heard of cost $250m and is apparently a disaster behind the scenes (also the co-ordinated effort to make Priyanka Chopra a thing is just fascinating to me)

It was then that the production team behind Citadel began to crumble into factions. According to sources, Amazon had some reservations about early footage, with the Russos, who were less involved due to a focus on their own pricey action project, The Gray Man, parachuting in. This brought about creative differences and led to two competing cuts, one pushed by the Russos, the other by Appelbaum and Nemec. As weeks rolled on, other project commitments had whittled down the creative camps to two opposing forces, Joe Russo and Appelbaum, who was the series’ showrunner.

Amazon chose to bet on the Russos, and days before Christmas, Appelbaum was let go. Says one source connected to the project, “What should have happened was Joe turning to Josh and saying, ‘Let’s get together and fix this’ instead of going solo. That’s not what partners are supposed to do.”

Appelbaum didn’t leave alone, however. Brian Kirk, known for his work on Game of Thrones and Penny Dreadful, and who directed five out of the seven episodes, also exited, as did line producer Sarah Bradshaw, among others

Adjusted for inflation, that's probably the same budget range as Something's Gotta Give and The Holiday. At least with the Netflix model, there's no backend, so big name stars get paid  more upfront and that's why their movies rarely look as expensive as their price tag. The Puck story says Meyers was hoping for $150M but that was too much even for Netflix, lol. She really is the Fincher of romcoms...

Funnily enough, this budget is only $10M more than what James L. Brooks made How Do You Know for back in 2010 (the good old days when folks didn't really have the MCU to blame the performances of struggling non-tentpoles on), a fatal decision that seemed to result in the death of the studio romcom (and took Brooks' directing career with it - it's unlikely he makes another movie at this point). I guess the moral of the story is, you're making a $100M+ budget romcom, you need to have Owen Wilson in it.

Meanwhile, this is one of those projects that just seems cursed given the number of notable creatives attached and then departed:

I can understand why both of these shows would be bowing out at this point (how much longer can their storylines really go on for?) but this and Succession ending at the same time feels like another "end of an era" moment for HBO.

HBO is losing Succession, Barry, Doom Patrol, Titans.

They will still have HOTD, Rehearsal, Hacks, TLOU S2, White Lotus, Euphoria?, Righteous Gemstones

With really only HOTD, Lotus, and TLOU being the big ratings getters. But yeah, they'll need to churn out another hit soon.

God just does not wnat this movie/tv series  made....

Too bad. The Book ..about one of America's first serail killers in Chicago in the 1890's..is fascinating, but it would be expensive to do  witht he period setting.

Update:

Sources now say, that while the studio was fine with $130 million, Meyers was still fighting for $150 million, with $80 million of that going to above the line costs. With both sides refusing to budge on the budget, sources say Netflix was leaning toward fully moving off the film over the weekend with the plug ultimately getting pulled this morning.

It's uncertain if another studio or streamer will take on the project. Meyers has a track record but also some truly absurd budgets considering her output... It would probably be better than The Gray Man, but was that really worth its budget, either?

ngl all of this is funnier than any joke that was told at the Oscars the other day.

Sometimes I can't help but feel some of these lavish, starry Netflix productions are a The Producers scheme.
