Weekend Thread - Insidious 29.6M, Jumanji 37.2M, TLJ 23.7M, TGS 13.8M, PP3 10.3

Recommended Posts

2nd Update, midday: According to industry estimates, Sony’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is dominating in its third weekend with an estimated $26.6M, however, it’s not the only movie ganging up on Disney/Lucasfilm’ The Last Jedi which is looking like it’s headed to third with with $20.1M. Universal/Blumhouse’s Insidious: The Last Key is currently eyeing second with  $21.75M

Ever since Miramax had Scream in the mid-90s, horror has won over the younger 25 set during the holiday and post-New Year’s period, and Insidious 4 continues that age-old trend this weekend. The fourthquel looks to win the day with $10.5M-$11M followed by Jumanji with $8.1M and Last Jedi with $5.5M-$6m.

STXfilms/eOne/Mark Gordon Company’s Molly’s Game broke wide from 271 to 1,608. It’s looking softer than the $6M-$7M that the industry was seeing with $1.7M today and $5M for the weekend.  Now that it’s a movie aimed at older adults, and it’s in for the long haul this awards season having picked up a PGA nomination today, a WGA adapted award yesterday for filmmaker Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay. Sorkin’s script is also nominated at the Golden Globes this weekend along with Jessica Chastain in the best actress drama category. Though the pic cost $30M, STXfilms is only in it for an estimated $9M. To date, Molly’s Game had made $12.2M.

Jumanji $27.6M

TLJ $21.5M

Insidious $21M (do we smell an upset for the #2 spot?:)

Molly $6-7M

"Insidious 4 continues to do so this weekend. The fourthquel looks to win the day with $10.5M followed by Jumanji with $8.1M and Last Jedi with $6m."

So Friday without previews is $8.5M for Insidious...that's a $4.5M lead for it to stay over TLJ for the weekend...not that small...

Horror movies like Insidious can be extremely frontloaded. Its not impossible, the numbers are very close to each other, but i think we cant say that till we get Saturday numbers tomorrow.

It would be great to see the meltdowns if TLJ hits 3 😂

I dont think there would be any  Most of the people (like me) who love the movie or had very high expectations had those after the CD number, we accepted reality at this point :). But one could very well see a lot of Schadenfreude from the people here who dont like the movie if that happens, even tough the ranking doesnt matter, the raw numbers do ;)

Yes, I know...but Moviepass is changing some rules on that, I think...the need to see showings with open seats does delay some of that "immediate" attendance, especially if you work Friday (whereas, you can pop over Saturday/Sunday and get a seat for a night show), and probably especially for new shows (where you do have more of a seat crunch at 1st day showings)...

Deadline projecting a very close one between them.

Well, let's see what Jedi does first today.  Deadline is deadline.  They're projections are usually horrible.  I don't see Insidious doing more than 22 million.  So for Jedi to drop that much would be a bit surprising imo.

In the last month they were good, and normally they over predict, they at least did it with TLJ.

$20m for TLJ...ouch!

Come on dude, we both didn't care for the film but it's 1:30 on the west coast right now.  Let's not try to bury TLJ before at least RTH's Friday number comes in.
