Not when the military are losing, and that's what's gonna happen indirectly in Ukraine. ALso, this movie will be veryyy hard to promote

military are not losers , no one cared about Afghanistan , now cause Ukraine they boycott military movies , we will see, sometimes it boosts boxoffice not lowers it

Cruise is in a very trick position. The movie is sponsored by the US military. He needs to sing it praises, but with the war happening i don't know what he'll do. This movie was such a bad idea.

Who knows who the enemy is. 4chan is not very reliable. Could also be Iran, but i remember Cruise visiting Ukraine two years ago (after the movie was completed). Could mean nothing, just a coincidence.  Anyway, if the war continues, i don't see how this movie gets released.

I don't understand what you're on about.  There is no "tricky" position, here.  This movie will get released, and if

Spoiler

the Russians are the villains

...ain't that a splendid zeitgeist moment?  I'd wager Paramount is in fact secretly loving this coincidence, if true.  Are you seriously saying, with practically the entire free world uniting to condemn Russia, that this will be a problem for MAVERICK?

And why would any major star such as Cruise suddenly have a problem incorporating positive word about the U.S. military into their promotion when they clearly decided to collaborate on using their assets for this movie?  Newsflash: EVEN IF the Russia/Ukraine situation was "controversial" (It's not -- practically the entire civilized world supports Ukraine) -- this current situation *does not involve the U.S. military.*  There is no issue here whatsoever with "insensitivity."

Lol at the idea that the War in Ukraine would hurt this film at the BO.  Here is the domestic Boxoffice for some war movies post-9/11 during Iraq and Afghanistan, they all look pretty good to me.  Black Hawk Down in particular came out literally right after 9/11 and it was a big hit with Oscar attention.  American Sniper was a ridiculously massive hit set during a supposedly deeply unpopular war.

Black Hawk Down - 108m

We Were Soldiers - 78m

American Sniper - 350m

Unbroken - 155m

Lone Survivor - 125m

Act of Valor - 70m

Fury - 80m

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - 52m

Would it be safe to put the Transformers movies in there as well since they're basically US military adverts?

Also, I've been out of the video game scene for well over a decade now, but aren't the most popular video games these days first person shooters?  Especially ones about modern warfare like Call of Duty?

Top Gun 2 will be just fine, if anything the Ukraine war would help it a lot.  This isn't a political statement, but we are a war people, we like war.  Its all over our entertainment industry and the news loves it for ratings.  Plus, sometimes it just feels good to see America kick some ass regardless of context.

Edit:  Oh snap, Top Gun was just added to Netflix!  Haven't seen that movie in like 20 years, time to fix that tonight!

Wait Russia is the villain in this movie? If that's true then its chances of success are definitely higher.

I have no idea if they are or not, but given all of the lusting for No Fly Zones on Twitter and elsewhere and the clamoring for fighter jets to go in and either make the "skies safe" or better yet, shoot up some "bad guys", this is just about the perfect time for a fighter pilot type movie no matter what happens in Ukraine between now and release.

Seeing some fighter pilots deliver some justice that can't be exacted in The Real World could be incredibly cathartic right about now.

I have no problem inserting a positive view of the US Military into a movie..since I served in the Us Army...I just hope it is more realistic then the first one. Any officer in the military who pulled one fourth the crap that Maverick pulled in the first part of the movie would be grounded, permamnently. He persistnely and dilibertely disobyed orders, and you don't last long in the military if you do that.

Let’s be honest, I don’t think anyone wants to escape the movies just to see a realistic portrayal of american military

I know but it does have to a ridiculous as the first Top Gun was.

The first Top Gun was also made in the 80s, right in the middle of the Cold War. I feel like filmmakers and Hollywood in general has become slightly more self-reflective since then.

Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Headed for Cannes Film Festival

Quote

Top Gun: Maverick is taking a flight to the Cannes Film Festival.

Paramount and Skydance high-profile sequel — starring Tom Cruise, one of the world’s biggest stars — will screen at the festival in advance of its Memorial Day premiere in theaters, according to sources close to the festival.

Top Gun 2 will open in North America on May 27, after beginning its international rollout earlier that week. Paramount declined to comment on any plans to show up on the Croisette, but buzz has been growing about the movie playing at Cannes.

This year, the iconic festival on the French Riviera runs May 17-28.

Cannes has long been a platform to launch a big Memorial Day tentoples (most play out of competition.) The fest gets Hollywood studios access to press from around the world, not to mention the benefit of high-profile stars walking the famous red carpet for photos.

2 weeks from tomorrow the marketing ramps way the fuck up.

Would have thought they would have waited 3 weeks for Sonic, but 2 weeks from now sounds like a solid 6-week marketing window.

I feel like Top Gun was at the very end, probably already effectively over and the "victor" clear to everybody by that point of the official Cold War (1947 to 1991).

Neil Armstrong walked on the moon right in the middle of the Cold War (1969).

For the reversal John Wayne Top Gun movie (Jet Pilot) was at the beginning 1949-1950, movie that was in post-production hell for so long that by the time the very advanced maybe we cannot show them in a film army technology was already on the obsolete part, "terrible" in a way but still an interesting watch, Janet Leigh, the era, Wayne propaganda, etc... it aged somewhat well. And the feeling is quite different, they are more ostensibly selling capitalism over socialism in a more urgent way and less certain of who would win.
