Ayyyy remember when folks said CumberStrange would be the new central Marvel character after RDJ leaves? :hahaha:

Feige (a major Dr Strange fanboy) apparently had that character pegged as the next Iron Man at some point. Take from that what you will.

Marvel right now is defining #FirstWorldFranchiseProblems when one new hit franchise is shadowed by another that's a full blown global phenomenon that's doing better (numbers not adjusted for inflation of course) right now stateside than....THE AVENGERS.

They can’t be that horrible right?

Otherwise why would people commit to so many films?

I can't comment on post-Ike Marvel contracts since we don't have that much information on them, but when he was overseeing Marvel Studios along with the rest of Marvel? Infamous penny pinching. It's legendary the stories espoused about him firing people for leaving the lights on in their offices when they step out or digging through trash cans to retrieve/recycle paper clips. As for the movies, low 6 figures for first films of leads. In fact I remember it being reported off the cuff that when ScarJo got her 8 figure payday for GHOST IN THE SHELL, she made more from that than the culminated amount she had made from the first several MCU pictures she did.

(The straw that broke the camel's back regarding Ike and that made Disney removed Marvel Studios from Ike's chain of command apparently was the heated contract talks over RDJ joining CIVIL WAR and Ike refusing to pay him his usual hefty fee, thus ordering a rewrite of that movie storyline without Iron Man....yeah imagine that. Imagine if you're Bob Iger and you're dealing with a guy who's refusing to pay 40-45 something million who's mug on your poster for a movie with a unique gimmick could secure you a billion bucks easily. Equivalent of losing a dollar because you're unwilling to spend a nickel.)

Anyway why would so many people commit to such lengthy (initially at least) low paid deals? Because they were sold that this would do wonders for their careers, more public exposure, help them secure other gigs elsewhere. And for many of those MCU folks, that's been the case. Would Chris Evans have gotten SNOWPIERCER without playing Cap and being the lead of his own series? Would ScarJo have gotten two big action-y lead gigs after playing an action-y character in one of the biggest hits in history? Would Hollywood have a boner for Chris Pratt without GOTG? Same guys for why filmmakers (at least under the Ike era, presumingly continuing as well afterwards to a point) where they don't have final cut, aren't paid well, work in a committee-made system....yet get that lottery ticket chance for journeymen/up and comers to put a blockbuster gig on their resumes going forward. (Is Marvel the blockbuster Roger Corman?)

That's why the Coogler hire was interesting at the time because he was neither journeyman or up/comer since he already had a financial/critical hit already in CREED. That's against the usual Marvel MO in director hires. But they wanted him, Coogler turned down offers until after CREED opened (ultimately a smart move obviously) and thus got more leverage, and they got him. And boy George, that paid off.

The Disney release posted $47.7M on Saturday, +66% which puts its second weekend at $108M, -46%. Can’t mention enough how this Marvel movie goes higher and higher, so if we’ve grown this much since Friday, we’re bound to grow even more by Sunday. At this pace, Black Panther would own the second best second weekend at the B.O. behind Force Awakens ($149.2M), and well ahead of Avengers‘s sophomore sesh of $103M.
Spot On from RTH as usual

Thank you, very interesting and insightful info. I just.. I understand what you’re saying and it makes sense that actors might think that the benefits of being in a Marvel film outweigh the low salaries but damn, even Emma Watson got a great deal for BATB. It just seems so unfair to me lol.
