‘Shang-Chi’ Marvel’s First Asian Film Superhero Franchise; Dave Callaham Scripting, Search On For Director Of Asian Descent

Marvel Studios is fast-tracking Shang-Chi to be its first superhero movie tentpole franchise with an Asian protagonist. The studio has set Chinese-American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvel’s first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. That film tied into African and African American cultures and the sensibilities of its nearly all-black cast, with a black director in Ryan Coogler and writer in Joe Robert Cole. The goal here is to do a similar thing: introduce a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers.

In the comics, Shang-Chi is the son of Fu Manchu, who raised and educated his progeny in his reclusive China compound, closed off to the outside world. The son trained in the martial arts and developed unsurpassed skills. He is eventually introduced to the outside world to do his father’s bidding, and then has to come to grips with the fact his revered father Fu Manchu might not be the humanitarian he has claimed to be and is closer to what others call him: The Devil’s Doctor.

Sounds interesting!

Get the hottest Chinese actors or Chinese American actors cause everyone likes to be represented by beautiful people. if you think that hotness of BP cast didn't factor in popularity and cross-appeal think again.

Dave Callaham is writing Wonder Woman 1984, Into the Spider-Verse 2, Zombieland 2 and the MCU's next big franchise launcher.
Dude's definitely got a good career ahead of him.

Get Constance Wu, Donnie Yen and Lucy Liu in the cast, go balls out with the worldbuilding and pay as many dollah bills as you can to have Roger Deakins as the cinematographer, so that he gets beautiful shots alas the Macau stuff in Skyfall. (Or Rachel Morrison, she did really well with Black Panther for the most part.)

Oh, and Justin Lin as the director.

650+ DOM confirmed with this formula.

i hope it's finn jones. he's available after all.

pull the old gender swap and make Jessica Henwick the star of Shang-Chi

(Of course, it would just about be indistinguishable from Colleen Wing, so a terrible idea. But wouldn't it be cool?)
