I remember The Diving Bell and the Butterfly getting nominated and it was produced by Kathleen Kennedy's company. Letters from Iwo Jima was produced by DreamWorks and Amblin and also got nominated. BoxOfficeFangrl
The former Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars is tied to the country that a movie is from, which is why American movies don't compete in it. At the Globes, it's just about what percentage of the dialogue is not in English, even if the movie is American in origin. At the Globes, a Foreign Film can't compete in Drama, Animated can't also be in Comedy, etc., there's no "double dipping" like at the Oscars, where a movie can be eligible for Best Animated/Documentary/Foreign Film and Best Picture, too. It looks like the team pushing The Farewell feels the Best Foreign Film category is its likeliest chance for a film nomination at the Globes (it will probably lose to Parasite, but is much closer to a win there than in Drama or Comedy). 1

filmlover
I saw Jojo Rabbit yesterday and I can totally buy @CoolioD1's prediction (I think from the movie's actual thread) that it's probably winning Best Picture lmao. Didn't love the movie but it definitely pushes the right emotional buttons when it needs to.

I could be wrong on both counts though
Jake Gittes
Baumbach's a great writer (with an almost 25-year career, most of which he's gone unappreciated by awards bodies; both will work in his favor this time) and this seems like a case where strong performances, not being biopic impersonations or other sorts of look-at-me "transformations", must mean equally strong material. I think he's pretty comfortably #1. Parasite is surely too cool to win Best Picture.
CoolioD1
parasite wins because all of the top options don't seem like typical choices there's a decent arugment against any of them and everyone likes parasite. it plays to all the brows from low to high. This make me wonder how Amelie and Pan Labyrinth was snubbed for BP nomination despite doing 30m+ here domestically. I guess that has something to do with 5 slots nominees. Valonqar
And different times. There's much more pressure to award a foreign language movie in Picture now than when those other movies were nominated.

I wanna believe that it's gonna be the Spotlight/Moonlight in this race. But I feel there will be a decent chunk of the old academy that would rank this low just because it's too genre-y or not "important" enough. Haven't seen the movie yet just speculating based on Bong's other films.

I still have him in (and Hollywood getting two wins), but I feel like Baumbach or Phillips will have more passionate votes. The narrative to give Tarantino a directing win this year has passed imo. I've dropped The Farewell from everything too. I think it's lost too much momentum, and Little Women and Bombshell are emerging in the acting categories. There's always been discussion about one of the three Sony movies not making it, and Neighborhood is the likely casualty. Maybe my stance on it will change after it releases, but I'm not feeling much passion for it. Edited November 10, 2019 by WrathOfHan
filmlover
Yeah, The Farewell seems to have lost most of its momentum and will probably need a miracle to get it back unfortunately. I can see it being a lone Screenplay nominee at this point.

Jake Gittes
Fully ready for Jojo to win best picture and Mendes best director tbh. Y'all feel free to expect the Oscars to do better but after the last couple years especially I can't. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. Likewise with Phoenix in best actor. (Still am on the Pacino train, at least, and original screenplay will be hard to mess up.) 1
