Visually it looks cool and I'm all for bad ass sisters battling to the death but I'm confused about the timeline.  Is this supposed to take place before the first and if so don't we already know how it end?

Yes. Chastain dies at the hands of Theron. Thor returns to the village with no love for life and Theron kills her sister the Ice Queen. 

 

And Theron takes over the kingdom.

The first trailer implied its a prequel/sequel though... (Haven't seen this new one yet)

not spoiling anything but the voiceover says this is the story before the snow white tale, so unless they are still undecided, that implies it is a prequel
