The 78% VA RT score is pretty good for a movie like this. This could have been another Green Knight disaster.

Green Knight was sold as a movie that doesn't exist. At least The Northman seems to have a lot of action and violence.

The Northman has action and violence, but not a lot. It's definitely not action heavy like the trailer hints at.

Other than that, movie is straight to the point. At least, movie was over very fast. I was engaged, so that's a plus.

That being said, the audience score means nothing. It's a small sample of 100 votes. CinemaScore is probably gonna be C+ or lower for this movie.

Can you expand on that?

This movie goes soooo fucking hard. Best Egger and best Hollywood picture of the year. I found his last two films to be nihilistic but fun aesthetic exercises, but this is something geniunely engaging and at times beautiful. Clearly morally ambigious and even contradictory, but we need more movies like that.

This is exactly what I said to the Focus Features rep on my way out of the screening last week.  I hope they pass the word on, regardless of box office.

Green Knight was sold as a fantasy epic with action setpieces and amazing visuals. Instead of getting that, the GA got a very slow and quite confusing movie with no action at all.

From the reactions, it seems like the Northman marketing isn't lying that much. The movie is in fact a straight forward revenge story with action and violence so that is why I think the audience reception might be a bit better.

That is all I meant. I loved The Green Knight but clearly it isn't for everyone. Apparently The Northman isn't either but we will see how the weekend progresses.

To be fair it did at least have that

Alexander Skarsgaard and Anya Taylor-Joy are gorgeous together in this movie. Everyone talked about how hot Zoe Kravitz and Robert Pattison were together but he was covered in that ridiculous Batsuit the whole movie, that's not sexy

Nah, they aren't wrong.

First of all do they really think all the girls who loved Titanic checked out Kate Winslet's Indies? her first few films post titanic bombed.  Even Marvin's Room with Leo which was released like a year after Titanic didn't do that great.

The Twilight thing is even more of a joke. Yes Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart do have a small core fanbase that made a point to watch their indie films but the majority of Twilight fans did not watch them lmao.

The reason why some MCU fans don't check out the actor other Indie films is because they aren't fans of the ACTOR, they are fans of the Marvel story line. It's like asking why people who loved the original Star Wars didn't watch Carrie Fischer or Mark Hamill's indie films lol.

Some of the actors in the MCU do have dedicated fan who will watch anything they do. Like Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Zendaya,  etc.

Next, god forbid not everyone enjoys a hard R violent Viking movie. Must mean the general populace is too stupid to enjoy "real films"

lol imagine being this pretentious. God I hate film twitter lol.

What is your infatuation with this movie and thread? Every time I open up it's either "this is a flop" "why did they spend money on this" "bad audience scores" "pretentious" "I cannot see this"(as if you would). If you have so much distaste over this film, why spend time projecting in a thread about it?

My fascination with this thread is because I want see the film. I loved The Lighthouse and I'm a huge fan of Anya Taylor Joy...... I'm so confused by your problem with me lol.

Yeah, the dedicated fans who saw Malcolm and Marie, Gifted, I Saw the Light, Crimson Peak, High Rise. Such major hits

Gifted was a hit, M&M was a Netflix movie so idk but she's getting paid 10 million dollars for her next movie with luca Guadagnino so apparently the studio thinks she has enough fans. Yeah some of Tom Hiddleston's films flop but he still has fans who see everything he does.

If hiddleston has flops, his fans are not seeing what he does lol

Gifted is hardly a hit with 24m and Evans hardly does anything outside of MCU that is sold on him alone (Knives Out is an ensemble, Lightyear is Pixar, and the netflix movie has Gosling)

All things going against The Northman having some break out box office success:

* R rated & adult-skewing / movie theaters dominated in general by kids and teens flicks like superheroes and Sonic the Hedgehog
* super dark and violent
* setting & time period (set over a thousand years ago)
*'original' / no brand recognition / obscure IP (well the tale of Amleth is pretty obscure in the U.S. anyway)

IMO, this is the best of the three Eggers movies and I liked it about as much as the new Batman. Eggers brings his weird style and a more than solid execution to what is otherwise a story we’ve seen numerous times before though perhaps not as violent and (literally) dark as this movie and its protagonist is.

It's more of a mass market movie with a straightforward & time-tested story and less baffling (which may disappoint some of Eggers' hardcore fans), but it's still a dark and violent adult-skewing movie which limits that appeal to a certain extent. Fortunately I felt it never degenerated into becoming misery porn though you can see the horror reflected in the general population on-screen though it doesn't wallow in it. I liked the score quite a bit - it fit well - and the performances were quite good. **** / *****
