filmlover
Well, good for Andrew Garfield that he's now going to Netflix's other big Actor push behind Cumberbatch.
nghtvsn
I just finished Tick Tick Boom and damn it was so good. I didn't know his story. I was familiar with Rent passingly but to learn a bit about how his story began was a pleasure. I would put this up for BP, BD, BA no question. It was so well done and it was memorable in multiple ways. I caught Power of the Dog a few days ago. I thought it was very authentically made for the time period. Cumberbatch was excellent in the film. I actually liked all the mains. Dunst was good but her characters gets kind of disappeared the last third of the film. I didn't think it was amazing or something I'd watch again but it was well acted, beautifully shot and a nice story. I watched House of Gucci in theatre and it was okay. Gaga was good. I thought everybody was fine really but it's not that memorable or rewatchable to me. Other than learning about the fall of Gucci and the most powerful scene being Pacino's I don't think it's going to win much. Rorschach
I honestly love how spicy this awards season is shaping up right now. A good chunk of the pre-season contenders we thought were gonna be surefire contenders are on shaky ground now. Not gonna lie, it's genuinely kind of exciting. Makes me curious to see what the Academy ends up going for this year.

BoxOfficeFangrl
Variety with the hard-hitting reporting... Tl:dr AMPAS voters have historically been fine with actresses going full frontal in movies but men, not so much. Apparently, only Viggo Mortensen seems to have escaped the curse in recent years. I would be surprised by a Cumberbatch Oscar snub at this point, but if it happens, there's a reason. Good news for a Big Willie Style win? BestPicturePlutoNash
Post critics update (ignoring Globes for obvious reasons) PICTURE: 1. Belfast 2. West Side Story 3. Power of the Dog 4. Licorice Pizza 5. Dune 6. King Richard 7. Don't Look Up 8. Tick Tick Boom 9. CODA ---- 10th spot is complicated. I don't think Nightmare Alley will get in by skin of teeth without any above the line nominations. It's also a genre dark thriller without amazing reviews and likely mediocre box office. Macbeth has underperformed but still time for it to turn around. Gucci has only shown up for acting despite being one of the most widely seen films. ALT: Drive My Car DIRECTOR: 1. titanic2187
Dune chance at the Oscar look so much promising with this level of industry support. On the other hand, I don't think Don't Iook up is this solid as it seem at the Oscar. The buzz is at the height right now but when all the fuzz gone, people will realise its mediocrity. Especially Oscar this year is latter than usual. Not to mention Netflix generally has problem retaining attention to their Oscar candidate. 55% RT score is just too much to overcome. Not even Vice, BR, or Joker sinks that low.
filmlover
Leto is so ridiculous in House of Gucci that I kind of want him to get nominated just for the lolz (he also was ridiculous in The Little Things, which he was also almost nominated for, but at least he gave that completely lifeless movie some energy it badly needed). And if not, well...third time's the charm with MORBIUS! Edited December 13, 2021 by filmlover

I will prefer some random foreign language film to get that spot.
filmlover
Don't Look Up will probably end up in the Best Picture roster for the same reason Vice did: being a much-hyped star-studded movie that's had buzz ever since it was announced despite no one actually caring about the movie itself (really, aside from the afterglow nom of it all and the closest competition for the last spot being Timothee Chalamet in a no1curr movie, how did Sam Rockwell manage a nomination for that nothing performance). Guess the only hope for the Academy to fall out of love with him is if he inflicts a Cats-style atomic bomb upon the world.
titanic2187
Also, depending how LP gross after expansion . I am feeling better for LP ultimate win with this group of candidates. Sure, box office maybe a non-factor in a pandemic year but a good box office certainly a bonus and differentiate itself from the rest of the competition.
stripe
My BP predictions ALMOST LOCKED TOP 5 1. Belfast - the British contender 2. Power of the Dog - the critics darling contender, part 1 3. West Side Story - the prestige connection with old cinema 4. Dune - the respected hit 5. Licorice Pizza - the critics darling contender, part 2 SOLID CHANCES 6. King Richard (best actor heat + biopic+ great reviews. But lukewarm BO and momentum fading) 7. CODA (a small film sneaking NBR + Globes + Critics Choice? Growing chances for a surprise, I would be surprised with a snub) WEAKER POSITION (1 OR 2 MIGHT/WILL MISS) 8. Nightmare Alley (no globe + not stellar reviews + possible backlash... but late December release + many possible tech noms + respected cast/director. Probable default nominee) 9. Don't Look Up (weak reactions... But chat is there and has its fans. It also hit with precursors) 10. Tick tick... Boom (another musical in BP race would be strange, but it's also a biopic. Best actor's heat and a way to recognize Lin Manuel Miranda's momentum) STILL IN THE RUN FIGHTING FOR ATTENTION 11. Tragedy of Macbeth (strange this isn't geting more love given the reviews, but attention can increase) 12. Parallel Mothers (Almodovar is loved in US. This is the foreign film with an easiest road to BP nom) 13. The Last Duel (expecting a surge, but House of Gucci might split the attention of Scott's supporters) 14. Being the Ricardos (missed some important precursors, but still not out of the race) 15. Cyrano (if audience support this heavily) 16. French Dispatch (solid support from Wes Anderson's fans) A MIRACLE Spencer C'mon C'mon A Hero Red Rocket House of Gucci Passing Titane
