Have no doubt that coogler worked his ass off on Black Panther. And obviously the movie was a huge landmark that extends far beyond the franchise. I'm not begrudging him for making it. And I think Black Panther is a solid movie. But clearly I think it's the weakest in Coogler's filmography

I will concede that BP has some cookie cutter superhero tropes but it also has some great moments scattered throughout the film as well.

It's kind of like Superman the Movie. On the surfaces STM is dated and it has cheesy aspects but the movie is ground breaking for several reasons (first superhero blockbuster, iconic score, classic performances).

Black Panther's third act is paint-by-numbers but the film is not toothless with it's criticism of colonialism, imperialism, and historic white supremacy and it's celebration of afrocentricity and afrofuturism is startingly unique among Hollywood films. Then you have Michael B Jordan's Killmonger which imo is a top ten superhero villain performance.

But like Superman the Movie the modern appreciation for Black Panther is far from universal. But for those who these two movies click for they're pure magic.

That Saturday's number from AQP2 suggest it play more like a horror thriller than a more family friendly- monster flick like Meg or JW.

The actual PTA minus preview is at about $11,562 which isn't really much higher than GvK's 10.3k, suggest that all the additional headroom benefit in term of capacity go to Cruella.

Nearly 50 million with screenings nowhere near full due to social distancing is fantastic guys. How many people don’t want to show up until the masks go (which vaccinated people are now permitted to do from this weekend after yesterday’s news)?

This is just the beginning! If Disney took BW off D+PA then it would do double what QP2 has just done.

This will be remembered as the catalyst weekend…

Question: When AQP2 goes to Paramount+, does that mean it will still be in theaters even when it streams on Paramount+, or will it have to leave theaters when it streams there?

No it will still play in theaters

I don't think I really think I disagree with anything you've said here. I don't begrudge people for likening these movies. I like many of them. Hell there are superhero movies that i love (granted I admit most of these don't come fom the mcu machine) My frustration isn't that there here andthat people like them.

I just wish it felt like there was more room for other kinds of major blockbusters in the marketplace. Superheros have become so omnipresent as the blockbuster entertainment that we're not getting anything else unless it's from Nolan. So it frustrates me when people want an immense talent like Krasinski to exist within the existing zeitgeist, when he feels like one of the few people who might have the clout to a different kind of blockbuster if he wants
