In fact, that demo is probably their biggest in terms of box office. I simply think Superpets didn’t appeal to as big an audience as other animated movies have. Nothing to do with habits changing. As you know, I place the underperformance of Lightyear firmly on Disney’s Disney+ debacle they need to resolve asap. When all is said and done, most of this year’s biggest hits would have had massive family audiences attendance. This audience isn’t just exclusive to animated movies. This demo is still spending plenty of $$ on going to the movies. As long as the movie appeals and the studios aren’t giving them away within weeks, we’re all good. Honestly the soft performances for both Lightyear and Super-Pets this summer is proof for studios that brand power (and to an extent star power) won't always carry you considering how much these movies were clearly hoping to piggyback off of the success of other projects (Disney/Pixar/Toy Story, Evans/Captain America, DC, the Johnson/Hart Jumanji movies) without doing much to stand out on their own. Rule of thumb is that if it sounds like a cash grab, and it looks like a cash grab, most will just assume it is a cash grab and save their money. In fact, that demo is probably their biggest in terms of box office. It’s not. Disney does their own audience sampling for big releases, and they reported families (parents + kids <12) at 12% for Strange OW and 14% for Thor. That share probably rises in later weeks, but still less than 20% of overall admits, and lower in terms of BO$ (since fewer PLFs & premium pricing) NWH (for which Deadline didn’t report family breakdown, but said 62% were 18-34) was probably the only one that really was a hit with families in terms of admits and BO$ Edited July 30, 2022 by M37
John Marston
wait Top Gun Maverick has made less than 20% of its gross from opening weekend? When is the last time that has happened for a summer blockbuster? Guessing the 90s

It was too frontloaded on OW to avoid a big fall, plus lost some PLF shows to SP. If Sat lands at like $7.5M, that’s -45% from first Sat, which is right in the range Scream landed. Should settle into a nice grove from here on out, with only Bullet Train really poised to steal away potential audience until September

At my local 22-screener, they're only giving Paws of Fury one showing at 11:20 in the morning. Lightyear has more shows. That's some embarrassing stuff right there.
