The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread

There was more of a nostalgic novelty (I know this is an oxymoron but you know what I mean) to a Mario movie than there is to Ninja Turtles or Transformers at this point. I'll grant the animation style of this movie might be more comfortably familiar than Mutant Mayhem's, though personally still not a fan of the faces.

Oh for sure there’s more nostalgic novelty to Mario, I just mean to say I don’t think the SatAm vibe is what hurt TMNT since other studios like dreamworks and illumination have that in spades. The international box office for TFOne is gonna be its make or break. Though yeah the liquid metal faces are kinda screwy. I know its been a thing since the OG cartoon but it’s hard to make work outside of 2D

@misterpepp Is Joker 2 presales starting tomorrow for sure? its weird I dont see any showtimes listed anywhere. Normally if ticket sales are starting, we would start to see plexes assign shows few days before that.

Maybe the complexes don't know and will be surprised tomorrow. But it's a little strange because WB made clips of the movie already and we saw the presales begin in few countries.

That would make the most sense. 

 

Warner Bros. probably wants to focus on marketing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and get its opening weekend out of the way before putting out tickets for their other big Fall release.

I agree. it makes no sense to steal the thunder of Beetlejuice during its release week. Ramp up marketing for Joker next Monday makes perfect sense.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice open caption presales are weak. But the open captions are not to blame. Rather, it is the dates and times that are to blame. So many of the dates and times are lousy. By lousy we mean the dates and times are when people are working/in school. Not surprisingly, most of the times that are seeing decent advance sales are at decent times that working people or people going to school can make it to a theater. A workday time before 5:00 pm, early Saturday/Sunday morning, and late Sunday evening are considered lousy and theaters cannot blame the open captions if there are zero sales for those dates/times.

 

Summary thus far: 119 screentimes and 417 tickets sold. Low ratio of 3.50. Still adding screentimes so there may be even more lousy dates/times added soon.

 

Here is the actual data so far. Will post subsequent updates. Bolding the dates and times considered lousy so you can see how prevalent it is for theaters to shove open caption screentimes into the worst possible date/time slots.

I'm expecting $22-23M previews. Top two Thursday previews of the year will be R-Rated comic book movies

I am not sure. Let us wait and see how OD presales goes. That will help us provide better perspective. After that its about building buzz near release date. I think anything that takes OW above 100m is win. This is not CGI driven action blockbuster. Its based on famous characters but more of a human drama.

Don't wanna derail this thread (because it's not even on sale yet) so I'll just keep it to this: $100M+ for Joker is easy and the real goal is $150M+.  . . people debating if Joker will do $100M is like when people debated over if Inside Out 2 would do $100M lol

Despite the fact that every comp dropped, I would still consider this day to be good. Not great, but stronger than how the weekend went. Tomorrow will be the real test that determines where this will end up. At the least it should sell 70-75 tickets, but if it’s closer to 100 then that would be very strong.
