Let’s goooooo, my T-1 predictions actually paid off for once!!

Nice! I had nothing pointing to 1.2 but the negative trajectory was indeed there in hindsight. Nailed the EA though so will take the W on that.

I only decided to track Haunting in Venice because it looked strong, and I figured it would help build out my comps, but I'm pretty sure I can't use it for anything else based on how it over performed here.

Well, can always use it if there ever is a fourth Poirot film. 😉

----

Outliers happen.  Believe you me, they happen.  Sacto and Harry Potter, for instance, are a notorious combination (or at least Fantastic Beasts).

But I wouldn't go quite as far as to say "unusable".  Might keep it in you back pocket for any other Brit skewing adult dramas.  Things like Downton Abbey films could possibly work, even with that doing well in the States.  Anyway wouldn't say it's completely unuseful but might be pretty limited to Masterpiece Theater style fare.

Agreed. Not unusable. I'm also keen to try and understand the market. That's probably what I find the most interesting.

I'm still not fully convinced that the British angle was the driver here, but, I'm at a loss at alternative theories.

It seems like Canadian trackers out West weren't overindexing, so, the effect seems more local. And the general defining factor of the demographics of this region is the multicultural aspect, with south Asian being the biggest ethnic group. Which, doesn't rule out that British interest being a factor, but not my gut.

Ultimately, every market is different, and I've yet to get a proper feel for this area. I've structured my data that best facilitates collection, not analysis, so I can't easily compare urban vs suburban and rural, even though my data gets all three categories.

Expend4bles, counted today for Thursday, September 21. 6 days to go:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 16 (3 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 20 (4 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 3 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 1 (2 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 2 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 29 (2 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 76 (5 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 147

63% up since Wednesday.
Comps (all films counted on Monday of the release week for Friday = 3 days left for Expend4bles, except for AHF all films counted in 7 theaters): Angel Has Fallen (1.5M from previews) had 199 sold tickets in 6 theaters (Expend4bles has 131 sold tickets in the same 6 theaters),
Rambo V (1.3M) had 205,
Plane (435k) had 89,
The Equalizer 3 (3.8M) had 431,
Creed III (5.45M) had 584
and The Meg 2 (3.2M) had 254 sold tickets.

It could reach the Meg 2 number on Monday which is fine (but The Meg 2 had quite good jumps in its last week). OTOH the presales in some theaters look anemic at the moment. To my surprise it has ok sales in the AMC Sunset but the sales in the AMC Fresh Meadows need an improvement soon.

Expend4bles, counted today for Friday, September 22. 7 days to go:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 20 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 11 (8 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 0 (4 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (5 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 0 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 26 (9 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 129 (8 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 186. So far not frontloaded.

81% up since Wednesday.
Comps (all films counted on Monday of the release week for Friday = 3 days left for Expend4bles): Angel Has Fallen had 136 sold tickets in 6 theaters (Expend4bles has 166 sold tickets in the same 6 theaters),
Rambo V had 116 also in 6 theaters (again the AMC in NY was missing and Expend4bles has 166 sold tickets in the same 6 theaters),
Plane had 83,
The Protégé had 32 sold tickets,
The Equalizer 3 had 307
Creed III had 667
and The Meg 2 had 262 sold tickets.

Idk. For that kind of film the numbers are (really) ok. OTOH the presales between the coasts are very weak at the moment.
I hope for nice jumps till Monday.

Small bump? Maybe not as it's similar to prior 2 days. If it drops back down tomorrow then we will know.

Could use some advice here. Trying to do my (somewhat) tracking of Taylor Swift here in Canada, and Im noticing that my amount of shows have dropped per theatre-whereas I had 7 shows in one theatre, now there are only 3-4. Should I be assuming then those other shows just sold out and track them accordingly? It used to be that it would still (on my pc anyway) a sold out show would just show as "sold out" with the time, now it looks like its just removing that showtime entirely.

Again, should I treat those that have "disappeared" compared to previous counts as "sold out" and add those numbers accordingly?

I mean these shows are selling out incredibly fast/very limited seat availablity, like if a show isnt sold out, its like 80-90 percent sold at least.

Like I said it doesnt help the theatre no longer lists a showtime as "sold out", it just removes it entirely.

The Creator, counted today for Thursday, September 28. 13 days to go:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 70 (2 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 27 (4 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 3 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): so far no showtimes
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 2 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 148 (4 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 201 (4 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 6 theaters: 449.

Up mediocre 26% since Monday.
Comps (all three far from perfect and counted on Monday of the release week): 65 (1.22M from previews) had 157 sold tickets,
Moonfall (700k but winter storms) had 584
and Dune (5.1M) had with 12 days left 1.342 sold tickets. But Dune is a mean comp which makes almost all films look bad in comparison because it had so good (IMAX) presales.

Overall a nice number but Idk how to classify it. And the sales will probably stay uneven.

You've encountered the issue that's been bugging me all week. Welcome to the party.

The issue appears to be that Canadian theatres at the outset were selling tickets to shows on the Friday afternoon. This applies to Cineplex, but also Landmark Cinemas as well. This, despite the US being only evening shows on opening day.

What happened at some point last weekend, is there was some decision to stop selling tickets to these shows. Likely from Taylor Swift's camp.

These showtimes disappeared off the website and apps. From what I could see in my tracking these shows were far sold out. From my tracking, they consisted of about 5800 tickets over 121 showtimes, or under 50 tickets per show at the time of disappearing.

No public statement has been made that I can see. Customers who had tickets to these shows were not notified that the show was cancelled. It's basically been a holding pattern all week.

If they cancel, I anticipate that there will be a rush on other tickets, but nothing has materialized.

Nothing has shifted on this all week. Ive been providing updates when I do my posts this week, but there hasn't been much to report.

Okay thanks :) I guess Ill just post what I have, means showtimes will obviously disappear compared to my previous count.

This Taylor Swift has been all sorts of just plain nutty trying to do tracking for it lol. Nice to know I wasnt just going through this surrealness alone!

If it's helpful, since the nuking of showtimes, my remaining Friday sales have grown 4.7% over the course of the week. You could try and use that to back out what the natural growth was, and how much the nuked showtimes are.

Don't know where the hell this came from, maybe they've started marketing this? Either way, pretty awesome growth.

The deadline article wrote the Sales for the eras tour are bigger in the areas where the live show didn't tour. I don't know if this is the case of the area you're tracking but in general could explain the difference in growth in different areas.

FINAL SOLD NOTES: "Final sold" is the number of tickets sold for the movie in question at stop of tracking while "% of final" is the percentage of The Era Tour's current tickets sold versus that final number.

AD-HOC COMP NOTE: "Ad-hoc Comp" is the normal comp multiplied by 1.45x (a 45% increase), which is what I am using for now to account for the difference in ATP between TET and all other films.

Starting to get enough comps online (if still perhaps high due to reasons), that I'm very tempted to drop the "% of final total" entries.  Never really liked it all that much anyway, if only coz I never sat down to figure out ATP differences between the various films.  I'll think it over the next couple of days.
