How is Minions having a better run in Japan compared to Inside Out? Sounds somewhat unbelievable considering how Disney and Pixar have dominated this market.

Honestly, the competition IO is facing is absolutely bonkers. They should have just released it in the fall.

In US dollars, can u tell us what to expect from JW? As a comparable what did Titanic, Avengers and Avatar do?

Thanks

With normal legs, maybe $60-65m? It's hard to predict the multiplier because it opened on Wednesday, which is a very rare thing in Japan. Titanic made around $200m, Avatar $180m, The Avengers $45m.

As catlover said it could come in around 60m, possibly much more if WOM keeps it going, 80m+. But the exchange rate is at a 25-60% disadvantage to those movies. 60m would be $90-100m 2-5 years ago.

Lawrence, Deadline posted that minions earned 3m this weekend for a total of 14 million in Japan by end of Sunday, is their figure correct?

New August Weekend Record and 4th Biggest Weekend of All-Time!

>Jurassic World delivered the biggest debut for a live-action film since Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends from last September, and the biggest debut for a live-action Hollywood film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 from 2011.

The fourth dino adventure sold 544,759 admissions across 802 screens over the weekend frame, and exceeded 1 million admissions (1,073,326) after five days in release.

It's guaranteed to gross north of the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone by opening this high, and since it's just before Obon Festival which will give it a major boost to its performance, the long-awaited return to Jurassic Park should be targeting a total of ¥7 billion (~$60 million) or more. If it reaches this goal, it would result in an impressive 30-35% increase of Jurassic Part III'stotal from 2003.

**********

>Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation had to settle for a second place debut, but its opening weekend saw a 1% increase overMission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The fifth installment in the blockbuster franchise sold 427,281 tickets over the weekend on 600 screens. This brought its 3-day total above an impressive 570,000 admissions.

The latest Mission: Impossible film should once again reach the ¥5 billion (~$40 million) blockbuster milestone that each film in this franchise has grossed in the past.

**********

>Boruto: Naruto the Movie delivered the second biggest opening in the Naruto film series, selling 305,396 tickets on 268 screens over the weekend. And with its 3-day admissions exceeding 510,000, it achieved the highest 3-day total in the franchise history.

The first sequel film in the Naruto series will be frontloaded, but with the support of Obon Festival, should be capable of exceeding the ¥2 billion milestone, thus becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise.

**********

>Kamen Rider Drive The Movie: Surprise Drive bested the debuts of the last two Kamen Rider films from earlier this year, ending the downward spiral the series was experiencing, and considering the level of competition in theaters at the moment, the debut is quite impressive.

The installment sold 171,297 tickets over the weekend across 297 screens. The debut may still not be enough to get the give the long running franchise another ¥1 billion earner, but it'll have a fair chance.

**********

>Japan's Longest Day (or The Emperor in August), the remake of the 1967 film, rounded out the record Top 10 in its debut.Playing across 210 screens, it sold 114,589 admissions over the weekend

The debut is fairly average, and the 10th place debut looks bad, but not so much when you take into consideration how many tentpoles were released in the past 5 weeks. It's also likely to be, possibly, the leggiest film this Summer, so I wouldn't rule out a total of ¥1.5 billion or more.
