After the Snyder Cut's success, it should be obvious to them...give filmmakers carte blanche and stay out of the way. It's clear the problem is studio-wide though. Godzilla v Kong was factory-made top to bottom, no Adam Wingard thumbprint whatsoever. And Mortal Kombat apparently had 30-40 minutes cut, including major fight scenes.

Does anyone know why streaming films get such a smaller number of audience reviews on RT compared to theatrical releases? You'd think streaming would be expanding the audience for these films, but Mortal Kombat only has 2500 reviews, whereas most even moderately wide theatrical releases have at least 3-5,000.

Godzilla vs Kong was also, what's that word... A big hit both at the box office and in streaming. And Mortal Kombat was pretty much the right length for that story with those actors, any longer and it starts losing the audience in a big way. There's a reason the phrase "cutting room floor" exists.

Both were mediocre "blockbusters" with awful world-building. WB is a far cry today from the studio that produced The Dark Knight trilogy, Gravity, and Affleck's crime thrillers.

GvK and Mortal Kombat both did what they were supposed to do. That is to make money and get eyeballs on the streaming service, and that's what the studio cares about and pretty much every business cares about.

 

GvK gave us a monkey fighting a lizard which is what we were promised, audiences liked it as well and Wingard liked working with them so he's coming back for another movie as well.

 

WB literally just put out Judas and the Black Messiah as well which contended for Oscars. 

 

Studios can put out big crowd pleasers which will get A Cinemascores and do smaller movies as they want.

Just putting this out there... GvK is a Legendary film more so than a WB. 
 

Not sure what the overall bad success for DC films has to do with GvK and MK anyway. Those two films did what they had to.. more so GvK.

WB are a mess w/ no creative vision sans Matt Reeves. It is comical, truly. So much untapped potential.

I wouldn't call it a success beyond its hardcore fans who were going to see it anyway.  Did its release buzz expand anything beyond that?  Has HBOMax/Warner touted its "extraordinary numbers" or subscriptions?  Whatever available stats show that many who started it didn't even finish the whole running time.  And it's clear that at the Warner Brothers level, they just want to be done with the whole debacle.  But Godzilla/Kong was a success in theaters and on streaming, clearly.  And I'm sure they spent less on the whole of Mortal Kombat than what they spent just on Snyder's "finishing costs"!

Apparently, the Discovery-AT&T deal would have AT&T spinoff WarnerMedia.
