Snow White had bigger box office, slightly better legs, and better home video sales than Pacific Rim, and its sequel floundered

Wasn't Pacific Rim better received though?

Movie geeks seemed to like it and, as always, assumed that everyone else did too. It's forgotten by most I'd imagine.

No movie will ever release on December 31st. Especially not a 150M+ budgeted tentpole. December 31st is the worst release date you can ever get, it is after all the holidays are done and all the big movies have sucked up the cash. No idea where ComingSoon is getting this date from, but just the idea that any studio would release a huge tentpole on Dec 31 is laughable.

Looks like if the sequel ever happens, Del Toro will neither write nor direct. This is like the fans made a faustian bargain - you get a Pacific Rim sequel but without Del Toro.

Not necessarily a bad thing.
