~ Inside Out, this has "breakout film" written all over it (currently) domestically but internationally, I hope Japan embraces the film and does not allow it to rot like Brave.

~ Cinderella, with "Frozen Fever" attached as a short, it will be worthwhile to follow Cinderella's run in Japan and other countries that adored Frozen.

~ Pokemon Movie No. 18, with the inclusion of this film, Pokemon slowly begins its journey towards the $1 billion mark for its animated film franchise.  If this film grosses around $30 - 35 million and the two other films that follow continue to increase or decrease minimally, I see this happening very soon.

~ Doraemon movie, of course it will be huge but I unlike it's predecessor - which was in my opinion the most amazing box office run of last year (excluding Hollywood-borne films) - I don't think will become HUGE, somewhere around the $35 - 45 million range, which is still a lot.

~ Dragon Ball Z Friza movie, the studio has very little to worry about as this movie will do quite well.

I'm not particularly interested in the animated film line-up this year except for Pokemon and Inside Out.  Cinderella is the only live-action adaptation that I believe will make a huge sum of money and without a Studio Ghibli or a Wolf Children-esque film nowhere in sight currently, it will be interesting to see how well other films fare.

Weekend Ranking (02/14-15)

166813_1.jpg

01 (--) Terrace House: Closing Door (Toho) DEBUT
02 (01) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount) Week 2
03 (02) Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 9
04 (03) Mortdecai (Kadokawa) Week 2
05 (--) Fifty Shades of Grey (Toho-Towa) DEBUT
06 (04) Annie (Sony) Week 4
07 (05) Joker Game (Toho) Week 3
08 (--) The Mourner (Toei) DEBUT
09 (07) Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 9
10 (--) La La La at Rock Bottom (Gaga) DEBUT

>Terrace House: Closing Door took the top spot, earning ¥251,132,500 ($2.1 million) with 189,897 admissions on 160 screens. This means that it sold 51% of tickets at the usual locations I report, which represent just over 40% of the market, making it the first time any wide release has outperformed the rest of the market at those locations since I've tracked them.

And it's quite an impressive opening, too. It's pretty uncommon for a film to open over ¥200 million on less than 200 screens, and Terrace House did so easily. Very, very few films ever expand beyond their initial release, but Toho might want to consider it with this one. Either way, it should be heading towards a solid ¥1.5 billion ($12/13 million) finish.

>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Big Hero 6 split rankings in gross vs. admissions again this weekend. Last weekend, the Turtles was ahead by gross, and Big Hero 6 in admissions, and the same happened again this weekend.

>Fifty Shades of Grey comes in below estimates, settling for 5th place, and it's largely due to the surprisingly low avg. ticket price.

The film adaptation of the global phenomenon (everywhere but Japan anyway), debuted to a poor ¥80,909,200 ($690,000) with 61,728 admissions on 324 screens. Obviously, this is very disappointing compared to how it performed everywhere else, but it opened almost on par with the Twilight and Hunger Games films, so it did okay, in my opinion, in the market. I figured it'd appeal almost elusively to adults, say 20-50 year-olds, but the ATP of ¥1,311 suggests its audience included a fair share of teens and/or seniors, too. The film only received a R-15 rating in Japan (meaning that 15 is the age restriction) versus an R-18 rating, so teenagers did have fair access to it.

>The Mourner got off to a rather slow start. Playing on 184 screens, it grossed ¥59,937,700 ($510,000) with 48,556 admissions. This has kind of become the norm for original live-action films released from Toei, so it's okay as far as comparisons go, but it serves as another reminder the struggle that original films continue to have in Japan.

>La La La at Rock Bottom rounds out the Top 10 debuts this weekend, and it made it on only 65 screens. No weekend figures have been reported for the film yet, however.

No offense, but isn't BDSM, and infact erotica and porn on the whole, quite popular in Japan?

Maybe it's popular and mainstream enough that they aren't titillated or impressed by tepid half baked so called "mommy porn".  What 50 Shades has going for it is the "shock" factor and if you aren't shocked, what is left to appeal?  The "Romance"?

American Sniper is in perfect position for a breakout performance. It's outpacing Terrace House last weekend so far, and is currently outselling the rest of the Top 5 combined. Clint Eastwood has forever been a popular draw in Japan, but Sniper should turn out to be one of his biggest films from the past few years.

If it doesn't break ¥300 million over the weekend, it'll come very close. And assuming it has fine legs (it is Eastwood), especially if it can surprise at the Oscars on Sunday, it has ¥2 billion+ (up to $20 million+) potential.

The Fault in Our Stars will join the ever growing list of young adult/popular book adaptations that disappoint/bomb in Japan. And it's funny that it follows Fifty Shades which just bombed last weekend. The Fault in Our Stars should only just make a Top 5 debut over the weekend.

And the only limited release that could break the Top 10 is The Case of Hana & Alice, but it's not looking likely right now.

Wow American Sniper! I never thought it would do that good. I was expecting a bomb/disappointment. I mean a patriotic middle east war movie, with "American" in its title? Doesn't sound like a movie that the Japanese would like. I guess they really love Clint Eastwood. And it looks like the "family man" part is appealing to the Japanese. Even the poster emphasizes "a loving father" rather than "a lethal sniper". Reminds me of Ted. That was also an unlikely surprise hit.

BH6 is getting closer and closer to 9 billion yen. Will it get there? Either way, its performance has been very impressive. After its OW, I didn't expect it to pass 6b.
