I'm usually the reserved one when it comes to box office but Gravity is going to be a mini Avatar.  it's not going to gross 700 mill but it's second weekend drop is ridiculous and it has a lot of similarities to Avatar.  I'm going to be bold and say this challenges 350 mill.  That's a 6.3 multiplier.  Avatar had a 10+ multiplier so I'm not getting nuts and saying it will do that but a 6X is not unheard of.  This is a film that has now gotten everyone talking.  It's the film of the year box office wise imo as it is an original film charging a premium price to see it and people are willingly doing so. This could go past 350 but I'll stop there.  It's a mini Avatar.

I think box office wise, Inception is a good comparison to gravity so far.I think it's safe to say Sandra Bullock is one of, if not the most bankable movie star on the planet right now.

Justin Timberlake has the biggest selling album in the US this year and yet Runner Runner flopped. Britney Spears at her peak flopped with her movie debut. It's a hard feat even for the top pop stars to crossover successfully in the movies. Sure there are cases like J.Lo in the early 2000s but it does not happen that frequently

Although I don't want to sound like I'm defending the movie, crossroads didn't flop.

I think box office wise, Inception is a good comparison to gravity so far.

It can also be compared to first Pirates methinks. A somewhat unconventional big-budget film that overperforms in its first weekend, gets embraced by audiences and subsequently legs its way to over $300m becoming the BO story of the year.
