Box Office: ‘Nightcrawler’ Opens with $515,000 at Thursday Night Screenings

Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Nightcrawler” came to life with $515,000 at 2,766 locations in pre-Halloween Thursday night screenings in the U.S.

Distributors began showings at 7 p.m. With trick-or-treating and celebrations taking place Friday, the weekend’s ticket sales are expected to be mild.

Forecasters have estimated Open’s Road’s “Nightcrawler” and Universal’s second weekend of “Ouija” will battle for the top spot, with the former expected to wind up in the $10 million to $11 million range.

A week ago, “Ouija” scared up a respectable $911,000 in Thursday night screenings at 2,061 locations in the U.S. on its way to a $19.9 million opening weekend.

Before anyone else freaks out: Halloween on a Friday is VERY BAD for pretty much every film, save horror films. On the other hand, increases are HUGE on Saturday.

I remember that being the reason Disney released Brother Bear on Saturday, November 1st in 2003, when Halloween was also Friday.

I expect Nightcrawler to end up around $11-14 million, which is fine considering Drive did similar numbers back in 2011.

So it might open to 10-12 million?

I'd say around $15M. Today should be around $3.5M given the previews number, while Saturday should have a really strong increase (look up the last two times Halloween fell on a Friday in 2003 and in 2008 to see how big everything went up on November 1).
