Warner Bros/New Line are likely regretting passing on it. The success of Gone Girl is proof that adult dramas can be profitable for studios, I think it's unlikely we see them in the summer months but I think October could easily have similar films doing well. Because he refused doing proper sequels to them at the time. In fact, Ace Ventura 2 was the only sequel to one of his movies he ever did before this. Wouldn't be shocked if it dropped less than 20% in IMAX which would bode well for a decent hold against MJ. Somehow I don't think it would be that expensive. It seems that actors salaries have dropped considerably in the last decade. My guess is you could get both Carrey and Diaz for about 2-5 mill each. Diaz usually gets $10-15m a film, Bad Teacher was the only where she took a paycut but opted for gross percentage and ended up getting $42m. Jim Carrey I imagine would ask for a similar salary, there's no way either would take a paycut without both backend and percentage of gross which would make the film unprofitable for Warner Bros. The point that I take from all of this is that some movies appeal more to DOM audiences while others appeal equally or more to OS audiences, and this is not because OS audiences are generally smarter or dumber, or have better or worse taste than DOM audiences. There are some valid factors to consider, but these are not among them. As for DOM versus OS gross, in the end only the total WW gross really matters financially, but it is nevertheless interesting to see whether a movie has more appeal within or outside of its home market, and to try to figure out why if possible (without resorting to the nonsense I dismissed above). FWIW, while Mads 2 lines up with BH6 perfectly for the days, I prefer the WiR comp, as they're both WDAS films with similar reception in more similar BO environments. The former is a coincidence that results from Madagascar 2 opening bigger--being a sequel is one reason, and this also makes it more front-loaded. Besides, as I had pointed out earlier here (or maybe in a different thread or in a different forum--I don't even remember now), no WDAS movie has ever had an OW multiplier as low as that (not even the crap they produced early this century), so I would be absolutely shocked if Big Hero 6 ended up having that kind of a run. Diaz doesn't get that anymore. What's the last film that would justify that kind of pay? The Other Woman was a good grossing film but it still only made just under 200 mill WW. It also had a budget of 40 mill, I seriously doubt more than a quarter of that went to her. The salaries have changed today. I believe Dumb and Dumber To will be a big hit all over the world. Many underestimate the power Carrey still has overseas, even his lesser movies like Mr. Popper's Penguins and Yes Man both grossed around $120M foreign. Incidentally, the first Dumb and Dumber grossed $120M overseas as well, pretty close to its domestic take of $127M, so it was definitely a worldwide hit right from the beginning, and it has only gotten bigger with home video and TV over the years. I will be shocked if DDT doesn't clear $100M foreign, $200M worldwide is a lock IMO. I also think that many were quick to write Carrey off as box-office poison after Wonderstone and Kick-Ass 2, but I wouldn't even count either of them as Jim Carrey movies, he has a glorified cameo in both, and in both he is playing an over the top character with heavy make-up and wigs etc. I know people who didn't have an idea it was him in Kick-ass 2 because the character looked so different. That Penguin movie made $187M worldwide on a $55M budget, not a huge blockbuster hit, but they were likely profitable once it hit DVD. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
