Kalo
There was talking of The Oscar going back to 5, did they ever make a decision on that? thought I heard something about them deciding to go back to 10 too, which imo would be way better than what they've been doing.

A full list of ten seems logical to me. It just feels incomplete when you have 9 or 8 nominees. It's kind of OCD for me.
stripe
This could be the most female oriented Oscars in years. We have five strong contenders with actresses as the clear leads: Carol, Sicario, Suffragette, Brooklyn and Joy. You could count Inside Out also as one of these films. At this moment, I think the strongest contenders are The revenant - buzz is strong. Great release date to avoid backlash. Biopic. Possible late BO hit. Based on a bestseller. Steve Jobs - strong male biopic + Loved lead and director: extra points there. And it's Universal. They cannot do anything wrong this year! Carol - reception at Cannes was strong enough. Lesbian period drama plus great actresses plus director plus Weinstein. Sicario - brilliant early buzz + great reviews + intense plot + possible breakout + actress talk Suffragette - period drama + strong theme + distributed by Focus Danish girl - biopic + gay rights themed + talk about lead + great technical dept + Focus. Too controversial? In the heart of the Sea - change of release schedule means studio is confident with the quality. Add in Ron Howard and its intense theme. Joy - JLaw + Cooper + DeNiro + DOR + inspirational biopic + Christmas release. Many points on its side. Bridge of Spies - I am worried this could be overlooked the same way Catch me if you can was snubbed, but the cast, director and theme are definetely Oscar friendly. The hateful eight - Tarantino's last two stravaganzas were nommed. Academy loves his films, and this one looks promising. Brooklyn - maybe, if it manages to find an audience. Early word is good and underlines the emotional aspects of the movie. Oscar loves emotional films. I am more doubtful about the chances of The walk, The martian, Crimson Peak, The secret in their eyes, or I saw the light. Honorable mention: Inside Out - glowing BO + gorgeous reviews + strong theme + emotional + great characters + original / animated = maybe. Fuck the Academy. If IO wasn't animated it would already be the clear frontrunner.
RichWS
Pre-festival top 10: 1. The Revenant 2. Joy 3. Carol 4. The Danish Girl 5. Suffragette 6. Bridge of Spies 7. Brooklyn 8. Steve Jobs 9. In the Heart of the Sea 10. Black Mass
CoolioD1
I'll go for a pre-festival prediction 1. Carol 2. Suffragette 3. Joy 4. The Danish Girl 5. Beasts of No Nation 6. The Revenant 7. Youth 8. Steve Jobs 9. The Hateful Eight 10. Inside Out
TStechnij
I'll also bite: 1. Joy 2. The Danish Girl 3. The Revenant 4. Beasts of No Nation 5. Carol 6. Inside Out 7. Bridge of Spies 8. Steve Jobs 9. Son of Saul ----------- 10. Youth Our Brand is Crisis, The Hateful Eight, Suffragette, Star Wars and Fury Road are probably 11-15. Not feeling very confident about Brooklyn, In The Heart of The Sea or Black Mass being huge Oscar heavy hitters. If Miles Ahead of The Big Short (which tests on Wednesday) come out this year they will both be in my top ten.
RichWS
I put Revenant at #1 but I'm truly feeling Joy for two reasons: 1. I think Russell wants the crown so badly he's bound to craft a film to get it. 2. After 12 Years and Birdman, me thinks we're due for a big populist winner. stripe
Interesting point. Which films can be considered as "populist"? I think Revenant has more GA potential than Joy
Jake Gittes
Joy, Steve Jobs, Bridge of Spies and Hateful Eight seem like the big populist ones. I doubt The Revenant will be the public's cup of tea even if it's good/great - Inarritu seems to be in full I'm A Goddamn Artist mode there.
RichWS
Interesting point. Which films can be considered as "populist"? I think Revenant has more GA potential than Joy I think both will make $100M+ but Joy has greater potential to be a big crowd pleaser. Also, it's easier to see the actors branch going for Joy's big ensemble.

The issue is if its bleakness causes voters to look elsewhere. Not to mention that they just rewarded Inarritu and will be certainly be hard pressed to do so again. filmlover
Yeah, I'm betting The Revenant does really well. Leo's box office track record this decade is flawless (aside from J. Edgar, but that was failed awards bait and performed accordingly), and Fox will no doubt give it a sizeable push to go along with awards buzz. I see it making more than The Hateful Eight, which will be a massive financial success if it does anything over $80M.
RichWS
Even if it makes good money, the problem for Revenant is that it's gone so far over budget. I believe THR recently said it's up to $135M.
The Futurist
I don't see GA embracing The Revenant AT all. The "almost no dialog" part could be very difficult to overcome. And the overall tone of the movie, suffering porn is not big with GA. Leo doesn't have magic powers, he has flops ( or disappointing bo runs), like any other actor. Though I admit, the movie will be stunning visually so this aspect of the movie could spark interest. The only time Leo has really faltered at the box office over the past decade is when the films themselves were lame and that lack of quality was reflected in the marketing campaign (J. Edgar) or the movie in question was way too chilly for mainstream consumption (Revolutionary Road). The Revenant won't be a megablockbuster but could pull off a total in the same area as The Wolf of Wall Street if all goes right for it.
Impact
Based off of the Academy....some indie film that nobody has seen or heard of will be nominated this year that came out over this Summer!
The Futurist
Based off of the Academy....some indie film that nobody has seen or heard of will be nominated this year that came out over this Summer! Nothing impactful was released this summer in that style. And the schedule for AMPAS friendly movies is stacked. Joy, Steve Jobs, Bridge of Spies and Hateful Eight seem like the big populist ones. I doubt The Revenant will be the public's cup of tea even if it's good/great - Inarritu seems to be in full I'm A Goddamn Artist mode there. What else is new ? FTF
This seems like it will be a really weak year quality wise. (it definitely has been so far) Edited August 30, 2015 by FTF
