Suspense and energy are built on scenes of sentence diagramming (that may leave you wishing Adams had been your English teacher back in grade school) and attempts to structure questions out of strange, alien images, leaving the film free of studio-deigned contrivances designed to ensure mass appeal and acceptance. More alien intervention than invasion, Arrival is an exploration of language and communication — both a how-to and a treatise on its importance — that takes an early hold of both your heart and mind. It’s only when the end credits appear that you realize just how tight of a grip it’s had on both.

Passengers looks more like a crowdpleaser. Arrival with it's overall cerebral and quiet filmmaking isn't that widely appealing. I think the studio would be happy with a 110-115m finish which is where i think this ends up.

Fantastic Fest: ARRIVAL Is Easily One Of The Year’s Best Films. It's also one of the best sci-fi films of the past decade.

I've seen Arrival, and I think it's terrific, but I don't think it'll make a huge amount of money honestly.

The problem I have with Arrival being a massive breakout is that it opens the same weekend as Billy Lynn and if reviews are as crazy for that movie I think a lot of Arrival's target audience will go see it instead.
