MovieMan89
I don't think it has looked "dark" from the marketing. Unusual sure, but unusual isn't necessarily a death knell for kids. Look at the stop motion films that were successful like Chicken Run and Coraline. They were definitely unusual. The latter was even pretty dark.
AniNate
And Fantastic Mr. Fox struggled to get above $20 million. Evidently the movie isn't as much of a broad kid appeal pic as the trailer might have led on.

Again, kids love dogs, hell they even acknowledge that with a line in the trailer for this.

I certainly wouldn't put it past Wes to put something like that in.
Barnack
Stop animation in general has a hard time recently, Kubo and 2 strings / Box troll were clearly for kid and family with a level of acclaim quite high, did not go over 50m, Pirates band of misfits did 31m, Shaun of the Sheep 19m. Hard to imagine a Wes Anderson movie making much more than those. The last success story a large scale for stopped animation, is it Coraline (that made 124.5m WW on is 60m budget) ? That is going close to 10 year's ago. Chicken run was in 2000. It is really hard if you are not pixar/dreamwork looking style animation.

I think this film would've received more than a PG rating (which it'll likely receive since it's been attached to plenty of family films) had it gone down that route. AniNate
He has a habit of throwing in moments of startlingly grisly imagery amid his largely cartoonish atmospheres. I can't say it's a quality I'm very fond of, but it's forgivable enough to not ruin his movies. Anger95Anger
Where does it list the pg 13 rating? The film's trailer was shown on many family films so anything higher than a pg is unlikely.

JB33
Saw the trailer for this at THE SHAPE OF WATER a little while ago. The voice cast is amazing, but it did nothing for me. Like, at all.
