I think this is a great article that explores the three different superhero universes (FOX's X-Men, MCU, and DCEU).

As to why MCU remains king:

and

I know we all talk about how Kevin Feige is a genius but really why the MCU would survive without him is Marvel Studios doesn't work like other studios whereas WB and 20th Century Fox are still traditionally making the DCEU and X-Men films.

But the MCU isn't perfect:

(Paging @CJohn since I think he'd be interested in the article even if he likely avoids this thread like the plaque.)

That was a pretty good read.

I thought "modern cable TV" was hailed as brilliant nowadays. How can people still use that hackeyed argument that MCU movie sucks because it looks like modern cable TV?

Don't people suck modern cable TV's and Netflix's dick raving about GOT, House Of Cards, True Detective, Stranger Things and so on like the best things since sliced bread, do they? Because they "look cinematic" on a superficial level?

Then what's wrong anymore to emulate a long-winded serial structure in movies? Things that were done back in the forties anyway.

Exactly. In fact the way Marvel is structured and how large it has become, it almost has to feel like a TV Serial or a long running cable show. what's wrong with that? Daredevil, the best comic to screen superhero adaptation ever imo. is a well TV show. It's because Marvel structures them like that that they flow so nicely together, I mean seriously in the long run there is very little to complain about in terms of continuity, it gives time to flash out characters and actually make them feel like real people, as well.

That's not to say it is the only way to do it. But it is the best with to work with storyflow and keeping everything together.

Like every show sure there is some "fully" movies here and there they aren't all "Great" but I have personally gotten even some enjoyment out of the weakest ones, and becuase there is some outstanding films in the series, it almost elevates the ones that are just ok. sure it may limit it in some ways, but as long as they keep cranking out quality films, why change?

That's not to say every studio needs to do this, they could just focus more on making great movies and not worry about continuity as much (X-Men, well they have some great movies) and it would still work.

DC seems to be stuck trying to cram too much into one movie and they all feel like trailers for their own movies so far.

When talking about the MCU, I always compare them to the James Bond pictures: They are afternoon killers/programmers built around a clear formula (with interchangeable parts) and charismatic/likeable/whatever lead having larger than life colorful adventures and while some are great or...not so great...they're for the most part decent entertainments that people basically know what to expect going in. Difference is MCU has much much more leeway in what characters and genres they can play with, but regardless I like to think the comparison holds.

The thing is they still feel like movies with a beginning, a middle and an end despite that whole over-arching shared universe serial thingy. They don't end on cliffhangers that leave you in the middle of the action to be continued in the next entry. That's what I like about Cap  trilogy. It's obviously tied to the Avengers series but they all stand on their own as self-contained stories with an arc coming to an epilogue even though a sequel is coming.

Enough with the strawmanning.

People who complain about Marvel films behaving like TV are mostly and probably not the same people who hail modern TV as "brilliant".

You all arguing that episodic-ness of these movies is not valid criticism are this close to RT watch people who will find something, anything to discredit a critic and his view.

Besides, according to this forum, people stopped thinking GOT was good seasons ago, most would say House of Cars is a bad soap opera, and that True Detective went fatally off the rails in the second season. Nostalgia Generator show created in a lab for the internet aka Stranger Things is the only one with some sort of universal acclaim, so far that is.

So you unpin Box Office Casino and Box Office Buzz + Tracking, one a very fun and popular game and the other a necessary thread, while you pin a Marvel vs. DC thread that is basically going to turn into flame war central?

:bourne:

Am I counting on Casino being very popular that it doesn't need to be pinned and the Box Office Buzz + Tracking to be active enough that it doesn't need to be pinned? Yes, I am placing lots of confidence that those threads will still be active and work.

DC fans also like that horrible Ghostbusters movie lolz

I thought it was Marvel fans like Ghostbusters? Let me see if I got this right. The poor reception to these DC movies is the fault of:

Marvel

Disney

Ghostbusters

Rotten Tomatoes

Hillary Clinton

Basically the only ones who don't get the blame are WB and the directors they hired. Sounds about right.

I still can't believe the pressure Feige put on his shoulders.

Having 3B investments on your shoulders 24/7 must be excrutiating.

Not if he knows what he's doing...and their history so far has proven that basically, mostly he does.
