Gambit has been in Development Hell for nearly a decade. Fox just seems unable to get a good script...which if the reports are correct, is a main reason that Liman bailed. And now there are rumors that Channing Tatum wants out for the same reason:severe script problems just a few months before filming begins. Irony is that Gambit is not the popular charecters he was in the 90's; he just does not have the massive following he once had. He did not have the staying power as a solo character that Wolverine had. I think Fox would be rise to introduce him in a X Men Film then see how that goes before committing to a solo film. If there is one thing responsible for a lot of failures today it is that studios start films without a solid script in place. I know rewriting during production goes on all the time, but there is a big difference between fine tuning a script and doing a major repair job during production. 4815162342
Liman leaving, Tatum probably leaving. The universe is course-correcting in order for the real Gambit to be reborn in the film universe. Spoiler @MrPink

The Futurist
Wolverine Origins has sold more tickets in 'Murica than First Class & Poe Dameron. Gambit was obviously the draw.

lupinw45
The DC mystic characters are faaar more interesting than Gambit, so Doug Liman certainly picked a good choice.

Nova
Fox has no script for Gambit? Let them ask their new star Ryan Reynolds how well that worked out for him for Green Lantern.

Yeah, it's not un-common at all for a director to part ways on a project after some development. Most directors have a few projects all simultaneously going away, for this exact reason. All it means is that no one could get completely on the same page creatively. It's fine, it's better that everyone part ways amicably instead of forging ahead regardless. With Stacy Snider assuming official CEO duties next week, it's also not surprising that some projects will have turnover.

dashrendar44
I'm always surprised how that entitled rich brat can still find work despite all his money burning aloofness and buttheading shenanigans behind the scenes. The Edge Of Tomorrow making-of especially that beach scene shooting is eloquent. The second unit director did all the heavy lifting in conceptualizing and shooting while Liman is just "figuring out" what he wants to shoot on the fly constantly changing his mind (the central big battle that involved lot of stunts, on-set pyrotechnics, VFX, all to be rehearsed and coordinated precisely priorhand on a normal shoot that doesn't leave much leeway for improvising) also admitting on camera that the third act of the script is not even written and set by the time they're shooting that sequence scheduled to be done in 2 weeks, it actually was done in 3 months thanks to Liman's antics (Interspeced with footage of Liman playing tennis with a personal coach that worked for Roger Federer on a private court set for him by the production). More or less, the end results have been positive for studios, so they'll keep working with him assuming their execs don't mind doing so. (And there are definitely people who don't mind working with him). Second unit directors tend to do a lot of big action scenes anyway, aside from the big popular geek action directors, so Liman's hardly alone in that regard.
