What's the demarcation line for cult and genuine pop culture phenomenon?  I would think SW is in the latter considering it also touches everything from books to video games to theme parks.

You left out

A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or as imposing excessive control over members:

Star Wars is too mainstream to be a cult film. Same for Star Trek, or The Matrix, or the MCU, or DCCU or whatever they're calling it. I suppose you could say they have cult followings, but even that feels like it's stretching the term too far.

Well Star Trek had a cult following for years-remember the show only ran for 3 seasons and was not a hit.

Right, but the films were never cult films.

Christmas Story is a cult film-which also had to do with the fact the film had some really bad trailers. (So did Hugo but that's another story)

Can we all just agree that "cult film" has a loose definition?  Something like Star Wars obviously has quite broad mainstream appeal.  However, within the fandom there is a very cultish element to it.

Yep. There's a lot of movies from 20 years ago that I would call "cult classics". Trainspotting, American History X, Fight Club to name a few. Not The Matrix.

I don't know about that.   DoFP changed the time around and that's a sequel.   

 

DP actually reverences the previous X-films several times.   You would even need to know the names of two actors who played a certain character to get one of the jokes.
