Rocky Horror Show is a cult classic.

Something that doesn't have initial interest or success, that gradually finds an audience of avid fans later.

That's how I would describe a cult classic.

cult
kʌlt/
noun
  1. 1.
a system of religious veneration and devotion directed towards a particular figure or object.
    "the cult of St Olaf"
  2. 2.
a person or thing that is popular or fashionable among a particular group or section of society.
"the series has become a bit of a cult in the UK"

you're right i can't see star wars in there at all.

You left out

A relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or as imposing excessive control over members:

Star Wars is too mainstream to be a cult film. Same for Star Trek, or The Matrix, or the MCU, or DCCU or whatever they're calling it. I suppose you could say they have cult followings, but even that feels like it's stretching the term too far.

Can we all just agree that "cult film" has a loose definition?  Something like Star Wars obviously has quite broad mainstream appeal.  However, within the fandom there is a very cultish element to it.

Yep. There's a lot of movies from 20 years ago that I would call "cult classics". Trainspotting, American History X, Fight Club to name a few. Not The Matrix.

Actually Deadpool is the first movie complete FOX-Men movie since the time line change and it officially has a new Universe designation so it's not a sequel even by that logic.

I don't know about that.   DoFP changed the time around and that's a sequel.

DP actually reverences the previous X-films several times.   You would even need to know the names of two actors who played a certain character to get one of the jokes.

Avatar, Wizard of Oz, The Godfather and Jaws all must be clut films too.

What's a clut film :P

BTW-Wizard of Oz actually can count as one-it barley broke even when first released.
