Looked like a cross between Splice and Species (minus the gratuitous nudity) based on the trailer.

Didn't see either of those movies, but doesn't sound wrong. It's just kind of competently made, that's about all I can say. It's a decent enough film that I don't regret watching, but I do want to see Kate Mara as an action hero now.

The sad part about The Light Between Oceans is that it could have been a minor hit if only Disney had put some effort into promoting it. The book sold well, so it's not like the audience isn't there.

As is, it's not going to make as much money as Cianfrance's previous film, The Place Beyond the Pines, which was a much tougher sell with its bleak tone and segmented narrative structure in which the biggest names share barely any screen time together.

For it to based on a book it had no buzz. Fassbender and Vikander are a couple in real life. Did they even promote it?

They were here and there but most of the press conference was spent asking about their real-life romance instead of the movie.  A total dump on Disney's part.

That sucks.

Why should Disney bother? It wasn't even originally their movie.

I first became aware of its existence 5 minutes a go.

True, but with how barren the Labor Day weekend always is, they could have at least gotten close to a #1 opening if they had put some effort into the marketing and pushed Fassbender and Vikander's combination of acclaim and real life romance. It would never reap the massive dividends of their biggest hits, sure, but at least the studio would be able to claim an additional chart-topping weekend if their efforts had proven successful.

Spending $10-20m more on marketing to add another $10m to the box office doesn't make any fiscal sense for Disney as a distributor.  Looking at the reviews there was probably a ceiling for this of maybe a $6-7m opening w/e.

Florence with Streep and very good reviews only opened to $6.6m in a similar amt of theaters though it's had good legs.

I like Fassbender and Vikander a ton (despite the latter winning a completely undeserved Oscar for that performance in that movie) but they have no box office pull of any kind.

The Place Beyond the Pines was no doubt powered by the combo of Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper (especially the latter coming off of Silver Linings Playbook) which made it much more enticing to audiences.

It opened limited first and when it hit wide at 1500 theaters it did $4.9m and it finished with $21m and that was with critical acclaim.

Blue Valentine also had critical acclaim and an Oscar nom for Best Actress and made under $10m.
