Elessar
Just for comparisson, TFA opened with $281m OS. Not sure if that was with the same number of markets but should be close. Edited December 17, 2017 by Elessar

Lordmandeep
That is a 18% drop in the opening so looks like a harsh decline overseas will be avoided. 700+ is pretty much assured.

Purple Minion
From Deadline: The worldwide figure ranks The Last Jedi as the No. 5 debut ever. Out of 54 overseas markets, the film written and directed by Rian Johnson, is the best start of 2017 in several majors including the UK.

catlover
Looks like in Japan TLJ barely dropped from TFA for the 2-day weekend and even increased from TFA for the 3-day opening in US$. TFA 3-day: $13.36 TLJ 3-day (estimate): $14.

Krissykins
Possibly under Furious 7 and Ultron too then? I dont see it going that low. Edited December 17, 2017 by Krissykins

So under. Don't think $1,4B is realistic, more like the absolute floor when TLJ has extremely bad legs. For US it's (probably) not possible to fall under $700M. If China only makes $50M than OS-CH had to do $650, can't see it having that bad legs. More like $750M US + $750M OS = $1,5B being realistic IMO. Under Furious 7, may happen, under Ultron, no way! At this point I don't think 1.4b is the realistic number, more like 1.5b. Topping JW would be very tough though. Would require very good holds internationally and a domestical total that tops 800m, and not just by 4-5m either. Which means it would need a similar multiplier domestically as TFA had.
Purple Minion
From Screendaily: The film opened number one everywhere excluding South Korea, India, Malaysia ,and Turkey. It opens in China on January 5. The Last Jedi delivered a $36.7m opening weekend in the UK for the third highest opening weekend in history, followed by $23.6m in Germany on the second, $18.1m in France, $15.9m in Australia for the second highest industry debut, $14.4m in Japan, and $8.5m in Russia. Also $8.3m in Spain, $7.2m in Brazil, $7m in Italy and Mexico, $6m in Sweden and $5.1m in South Korea. It delivered the second highest industry weekend behind The Force Awakens in Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, Hungary, and Croatia; the third highest in Denmark and Norway; and the fourth highest in Finland. There were new top opening weekend of 2017 marks in the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Japan (for a Western film), Spain, Sweden, Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Hungary, Iceland, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Serbia, and Switzerland. The UK and Norway generated the industry’s third highest opening days, while The Last Jedi scored the highest opening days of 2017 in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Bosnia, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

So a pessimistic scenario is $1.4 billion ($700 dom + $700 os).

Legacy fans are very divided. But CinemaScore is 'A' so I expect it to be leggy domestically as most 'A' movies are quite leggy. Pessimistic scenario is $1.4 billion. Realistic is $1.5 billion. Optimistic scenario is $1.6 billion.
MattW
Unless I'm missing something Rogue one legs will get it to about 750 from current markets. I think 1550m or more

Agafin
TFA grossed $1007m OS-China from a $281m OW. That's a 3.58 multiplier. Rogue One for its part opened to $135m and ended up grossing $460m OS-Ch for a 3.41 multi. Ignoring some of the few differences in release dates here and there, I think TLJ's multiplier will fall somewhere in the middle, like say 3.5 for $800m OS-Ch. Worst case I think would be $750m OS-Ch. Its daily performance will probably follow Rogue One's since in both cases, their first week occurs when the majority of schools are still in session in most countries (slightly more for TLJ), unlike TFA.

IronJimbo
I definitely didn't feel the buzz this year in the UK like I did in 2015, I guess that reflects the -27% change in the UK's gross.
