2017: The release of Resident Evil, The Ring, xXx, a Shyamalan thriller, and a Spider Man film.

yes we are frozen in time. Except all of them were hits in 2002, and only two will be hits in 2017.

Both xXx's were also greenlit on the back of successful Fast and Furious films. Hollywood reuses plotlines both on and off the screen!

Universal did successful marketing on Split, they released the trailer in late July. It was popular on social media, and then they started to have TV spots start in early December. Then lots of advertisements on shows like The New Celebrity Apprentice, and some stuff on Comedy Central. Get Out is next, not as big but will make a killing at the box office. Then the next big horrror film won't be until Annabelle 2 in August.

While home video indeed has costs, otoh TV/streaming rights remain surprisingly profitable - the costs there are practically zero. 85m is actually a very reasonable play for a film that should have a good run OS, which in turn paves the way for decent home and video sales in those markets. I think the film indeed barely breaks even at 200m - which already is far from flopping - and I think it will go a bit above that, which should ensure a modest profit. 50 DOM + The Last Witch Hunter OS already puts the film at 200m, and xXx3 should have more appeal to OS F&F fans than The Last Witch Hunter had.

Don´t get me wrong, I'm just saying that exact "200M" WW is closer to giving loss to the studio than "far" as baumer spoke here.

HV WW costs should be 20M
109.5 exposed
Others earnings:
+ ~25M from DOM HV(Including VOD)
+ ~20M from DOM TV(Pay + Network)
+ ~30M from OS HV
+ ~40M from OS TV

= ~115M and I am being generous

~5.5M of profit

Well, these numbers are generally proportional to movie box office. TVs usually do not pay much money for the right of a movie flopped at the box office, for example. What I mean is that 200M at BO is closer to giving loss to Paramount than far. If it does a little less at box office and the other numbers (HV, TV) fell proportionately, it would give loss to the studio.

If you're curious about movie profit, take a look at these articles:

They do not show the exact numbers, but they are estimatives.

Allison, that would all be fine and good but the way that BOX OFFICE profit has always been calculated as far as assigning bomb or loss status is 2x the stated budget. Neither of you are wrong, but you are trying to change the way the numbers are looked at and it isn't going to work. Ancillary finances are taken into account at the front not at the end of the discussion of the budget otherwise the budget would be different.

The studio gets a pass on this film.

Off topic, but I just finished rewatching X-Men: Apocalypse. It might actually be my favorite X-Men movie and it's definitely the best CBM from lat year. It it so damn fun! I want a Dark Pheonix saga! Fox needs to make one where they actually concentrate on it! And I hope Fassbender returns. Magneto might have killed millions of people, but he's still so damn likable.

Definitely the best CBM from last year, yup.

Dark Phoenix saga next was the plan all along and since the sequel seems to start shooting in April it seems there won't be any sort of reboot so these plans should be followed through. I'm really hoping for that as well, that ending set it up perfectly.

Here's the article about the shooting date and the (possibly temporary)name of the sequel:

Well, you're right, I prefer the "2x the budget" rule than the ridiculous rule of "need to break even on the BO to make profit", conveniently used when Bvs and Suicide Squad were on release. I just questioned "xXx being far from being a flop with 200M WW (only 30M more than 2x budget rule)" because studios receive a higher percentage DOM than OS and xXx is not going to make big numbers DOM, not to mention I believe that much of the xXx OS box office will come from China, which studios receive only ~25% of the box office. But anyway, I agree with you and I believe that xXx will do a good business (more than 200M WW too) :)

The problem here is that even though Bye Bye Man dropped below Passengers the second day, Passengers can't get those screens back.  Oh well.

That is, assuming I'm reading the order right? The 911 for Bye Bye Man and the 1210 for Passengers?

Dead at Split's OD number. I didn't think the premise of this movie would generate that much interest.

Shyamalan continues to slay us all. :worthy:

Well I would say he's back to slaying

I'm half-laughing at you. It doesn't hold a candle to The Sixth Sense (it is on par with Unbreakable, though).

We have been talking about the Sixth Sense for about 20 years and still. In two months no body will give a shit about Split. It is not about numbers Wrath!!!!

In terms of cultural impact? Unlikely. Sixth Sense is a classic of the thriller film genre
