doesn’t sound like they are skimping on marketing

It might be a case the they are spending on marketing, but the marketing itself is not that great. You don't have a good campaign, it does not matter how much you spend on it, it won't work.

Frankly, the whole zeitgeist just does not seem right for a Top Gun sequel.

That too. Plus the movie will make The Mummy 2017 look like a masterpiece. Oh boy, so many people will be embarrassed of this movie. Some things should remain in the 80s

Yeah, Reagan is not President any more.

I think that America is pretty war weary after 18 years of military conflict, and just are not in the mood for a rah rah contemporary war movie.

Paramount probably didn't finance a big part of it especially after Genisys' domestic to international ratio. So, it may still be profitable for them. Especially now that Netflix and Amazon are willing to pay more to license their movies.

And also audience may be skewing older thanks to Linda Hamilton's return so it may not open as bad as presales suggest.

Deadline reports that Paramount financed 30% of the budget. (Fox also financed 30%)

Once again: it's a truly great movie, see it this weekend - or you'll kick yourself later.

On the other hand, speaking about a movie NOT great: here's very short clip showing exactly what the public reaction to this Dune movie will be:

also: boy, this Chalamet dude does look pretty ugly (to me) - but such weird faces often work in cinema, for certain types and projects (not a lead though)

Why is this poised to do so mediocre at the box office though???

Someone in HSX made an interesting point:

thurs is a Halloween, which is always one of the worst days for US boc office.

Example: in 2008, Halloween was a Friday, Zack and Miri Make a Porno did 2.2 million on its opening day, on Saturday it went up 119% to 4.8 million

Why you always got a hate-boner for "The Frenchie"...?  It is kind of creepy, to be honest.
