I've never really cared about ATJ but him as an Oscar nominee was a fun thought. Oh well. We have Garrett Hedlund and Armie Hammer possibly in the hunt for Oscar nominations this year, so the "bland white dude that Hollywood has tried desperately and mostly failed to make happen finally having their day" dream is still alive.

filmlover
I'm guessing Adams having two performances that got acclaim cancelled her out. Plus, after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy last year, nominating Ruth Negga was probably some sort of safety net.

Valonqar
No, definitely great for Shannon. I'm most happy for Vuggo, though. he's his own thing, doesn't give a fuck about Hollywood system.

filmlover
Everyone is always quick to jump to how Streep only gets nominations just because she's Streep at this point, but she's still by far one of the best actresses working today with an undeniable commitment to her craft. Considering how baity her role in Florence Foster Jenkins is, it's really not surprising they fell for it.
filmlover
Should be exciting to see how the nominees fare at the box office now (except Hell or High Water, since that's now out on DVD). La La Land and Hidden Figures will continue raking in the cash, while Manchester by the Sea should cross $50M now. Moonlight and especially Lion should see nice bumps now too. Incarnadine
Only two things really surprise me with these noms: 1- No Amy. After Emma Amy is who I'd have wanted to win. 2 - Suicide Squad has an Oscar nomination and Deadpool doesn't

It was done for under 20M and has multiple nominations unlike DS and TJB. I saw that bogus number in the VFX round up and I wonder if it's what the VFX people actually believed when voting. The movie cost $120m after about $35-40m in state tax rebates Ecstatic for Hubbert who gave the best performance by any one in any film I saw last year (maybe in years). If, though probably when, she loses to Stone it will be a travesty and I will start a #BestActressSoYoungCauseTheMaleVotersAreSoPervy campaign. And for Viggo who's my #1 guy and Octavia who was my #1 in Supporting (though she'll lose to Viola's sketchy placement there). Gibson? Ha Ha. Moana was screwed out of best score and Adams was screwed. La LaLand with 14 noms is so overrated but it's a very beautiful looking love letter to being a self involved & shallow yet successful little snowflake dreamer in Hollywood. Eevin
So Silence turned out to be kind of a disaster...I think Scorsese definitely deserves a "one for me" project, but it's getting no box office traction and the lone cinematography nom isn't helping anyone. For God's sake, Passengers got more nominations. Sully was similarly a highly buzzed-about awards film that died down, but at least it made a lot of money. I love Scorsese, but Silence's performance isn't exactly a strong indicator that people will see his movies without DiCaprio as the lead anymore. filmlover
I'll be surprised if anything but The Jungle Book takes him Visual Effects. The work done on the animals was something else.
stripe
Best surprise: Gibson (BD) Dullest and worst snub: Amy Adams (hard to explain given the love for the film) Surprising snub: Hugh Grant (maybe because splitting votes, some voting him as lead) Worst category: Score (2 scores are mediocre: Jackie and Passengers) Best categories: both Screenplays and Cinematography. WTF: 13 Hours nommed in Sound mixing. MEH: Fantastic Beasts' two noms. 'Been there, done that' feeling. Anyways, a very predictable list of nominations, isn't it? filmlover
That 13 Hours nomination legit made me laugh. Never thought I'd see the day a Scorsese movie and a Michael Bay movie got the same number of Oscar nominations but here we are.

Stone, Portman, Streep and Adams seemed locked, with 5th spot up for grabs but likely Huppert's. Since Huppert got in but Adams didn't, I'd say Nega did her in.
