Number of first-place votes: 5

IMDB synopsis: Earth's mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to stop the mischievous Loki and his alien army from enslaving humanity.

I’m not sure what else can be said. THE AVENGERS is the culmination of Marvel spending years of careful prep and planning, introducing most major characters through their own stand-alone movies while planting the seeds for the Avengers storyline. Whedon managed the tough task of bringing all these various characters together quickly and with little complication, allowing the movie to largely stand on its own if you hadn’t seen the other Marvel movies, and his deft, light touch made the 2 hour 23 minute runtime fly by, with lots of fun one-liners and moments for each character to shine.

At the box-office, this was an absolute juggernaut, crushing the existing opening weekend record and then managing a 3x multiplier off that — the last superhero movie to accomplish this feat was Sam Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN in 2001.

Tomato meter: 92%, 8/10

Academy Awards: 0 wins, 1 nomination

Random critic comment: “If you are a Marvel fan, then The Avengers will feel like Christmas. Thanks to the merry doings of the director, Joss Whedon, all your favorite characters are here, as shiny and as tempting as presents under the tree.” —Anthony Lane, New Yorker

Random RTM comment: “I love this movie. The majority of you will too. That's all.” —@Chewy

Liked for the movie. Then unlike and like again for that @Chewy's quote.

Need to revisit this too. Maybe before Ragnarok.

@aabattery Take comfort in knowing Boy wasn't on the edge like Hunt for Kiwi Smurfs.

This list is hopeless.

we always elect one person to be just a little too bitter about these lists, sometimes it's been me, but you definitely drew that straw for this one.

Silver Linings Playbook
written and directed by: David O. Russell, based on the novel by Matthew Quick
starring: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jackie Weaver

silver-linings-playbook-poster.jpg

Number of first-place votes: 4

IMDB synopsis: After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.

Russell had originally planned to work with Bradley Cooper on an adaptation of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES (!). When he moved on from that project, Russell initially intended to make SILVER LININGS with Vince Vaughn and Zooey Deschanel, but made THE FIGHTER instead. Then he was set to do the project with Mark Wahlberg, who had to drop out due to… you guessed it… a scheduling conflict. Anne Hathaway was cast as Tiffany, but ran into scheduling issues with DARK KNIGHT RISES (and supposedly she had creative differences with Russell as well). Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Angelina Jolie, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough, and Olivia Wilde were all considered as well. Initially, Russell did not believe Lawrence's age was suitable for the role, as he thought she was too young to play against Cooper, but her audition changed his mind.

A darker, more extreme version of the dance sequence was filmed and scenes with De Niro's character were shot in multiple versions, with the character harsher or warmer, as Russell worked with editor Jay Cassidy to set the balance they wanted.

The movie was a critical and box-office success, winning a Best Actress Oscar for Lawrence and grossing 236 million worldwide.

Tomato meter: 92%, 8.2/10

Academy Awards: 1 win, 5 nominations

Random critic comment: “A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.” —Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Random RTM comment: “This has taken its place as the best comedy I have seen in years, romantic or otherwise.” —@Webslinger
