The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

So, if we use Spidey HC as the baseline (which got insane Thursday/Friday walk ups), how is Ant Man comparing now that we are 6 hours to showtime (since it has 6pms tonight)?

I know Spidey put up $15.4M in previews (which grew rapidly through the night from Deadline's original $10M+, was it?)...is Ant Man gonna be close, or is it looking more like a "somewhere around $10M" start?

Here is how Ant-Man looks tonight at my theater. I don’t know how other theaters are but it having so little Thursday showtimes relative to the type of film it is, will limit how much it can do in previews. It’s odd imo because during the weekend it’s getting 5 3D showtimes and 5 2D showtimes which is almost how much DP2 and Solo got and around what JW2 got. Those films had more showtimes on Thursday though so I have no idea why Ant-Man only has 4 showtimes tonight.

2D

6PM: 123/142

9PM 100/142

Figured it'd be to #1 by now with it coming out tonight.

It's not like it's guranteed to be the number 1 grosser for Thursday. There's a definite possibility that both it and Jurassic end up with 9M for Thursday, in which case it wouldn't be too crazy for it to only end up on par with JW by the end of the day if not just slightly ahead.

Also - this is a TRAILING 24 hour number. So here we sit at 4pm ET/1pm PT, still catching almost the whole moviegoing Wednesday, nationwide.

If it were even at this point it would suggest momentum to smash the other two on Thursday, because Thursday is only maybe 50% of the data being compared at this point.

Ant-Man 665 3415 19.47%

Comps:

72% of Thor: Ragnarok ($89.4M)

47% of Justice League ($44.4M)

186% of Coco ($94.6M)

16% of Infinity War ($41.9M)

39% of Deadpool 2 ($49.5M)

62% of Solo ($52M)

26% of Incredibles 2 ($47.5M)

49% of Jurassic World ($72.2M)

Leaning towards Thor: Ragnarok as the best comparison here, both being Marvel movies, and partially because Ant-Man seems like it will get a lot of walk-ups thanks to family audiences which can help drive it towards that number.

But as always, I feel as if a number between Jurassic World and Thor seems like the safest bet.

Ant-Man started with very few Thursday shows (5 and 6) at my 2 locals this morning, but just got 2 extra 2d showings at each (for 7 and 8 now) - this is more than Solo, but still less than normal supers...but it's still only 4:50pm...

Nearing 10 points behind I2+FK (actually is exactly 10.0 behind atm lol), think it will get there in maybe 2 more hours.

If it can snag a 12.5 preview or so than 100 will still be in play. Holiday+First Purge is make compe hard, but I think it should be 10-13 or so.

So far from these numbers -  it's looking like a $11-12m range.

(Tossing out Solo since it had heavier than usual early pre-sales and didn't gain accordingly on Thur. BP also exploded during the night)
