The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Remember when people were saying the MCU had hit it's peak after AoU and CW 'disappointed'.

I dunno, that CW disappointment talk seems even more reasonable now that it will be a below average phase 3 movie DOM and WW :hahaha:

Age of Ultron just didnt do anything ... special. Seeing the heroes together wasnt a novelty anymore, the promised dark villain was kind of a joke, the film handeled its many characters in my opinion not nearly as good the The Avengers (2012) and some scenes (like Thors visions) just felt out-of-place. The whole thing just wasnt as enjoyable as the first one and thus the legs suffered imo.

Civil War had the same problems imo, but here they were even worse: Hero vs Hero is great in concept, but doesnt bode well for legs because the whole story is just very serious and sad - but at the same time CW didnt really have any consequences, so ... what was its purpose? Infinity War brushed Civil Wars conflict aside as a joke (Beatles) for a reason. Also, the film is overlong and has pacing issues in my opinion, making it not good for rewatches.

Civil War is great and it had consequences - being separated is why they lost in AIW at least according to M&M and The Russos.

Imagine Tony not having to rely on the GOTG to take down Thanos and everyone having the same information.   You know as soon as Quill bloviated, Drax said he wasn't paying attention and Mantis said "Kick names and take asses" Tony was re-evaluating all his life choices.

I'd say CW had consequences, also I'd disagree on AoU but that's a different topic.

By the way, regardless of what i thought of the film, Civil Wars box office was never and is not disappointing to me. It was the highest-grossing movie worldwide in 2016. 1,1B is a great result for that movie and i will stand by that.

Not only is our biggest theater dropping US this weekend, they're also dropping Pet Semetary.

We still have Captain Marvel, which makes sense, but I'm surprised PS is leaving so soon.

& No Penguins or Fast Color :(

Local sets for the week - the clear outs already start:).

So, my locals have cleared some deadweight this week to book most of the new movies...few March survivors (and no February ones) exist at this point...and the new movies all fit into single screens, b/c there are already a lot of screens in use and a lot of openers...here are the sets...

Cinemark 12

NEW

Hellboy (1 - 5) (biggest screen type)

Little (1 - 5) (above average screen type)

Missing Link (1 - 5) (smallest screen type)

Foreign Films - 3 films booked (2) (smallest screen type)

Holdovers

Shazam (2 - 9) - identical to last weekend)

Pet Semetary (1 - 5) - lost a full screen

The Best of Enemies (1 - 5) - also identical to last weekend)

Dumbo (1 - 5) - lost a full screen

Captain Marvel (1 - 5)

Us (1 - 5)

Gone - Five Feet Apart, HTTYD 3, other foreign films

Regal 12

NEW

After (1 - 5) (below average size)

Hellboy (1 - 5) (above average size)

Little (1 - 6) (above average size)

Missing Link (1 - 2 3d, 4 2d) (average size)

Holdovers

Shazam (almost 2 - 8 ) - lost a single showing or .25 screen

Pet Semetary (1 - 5)

Best of Enemies (1 - 5)

Dumbo (1 - 5) - lost a full screen

Us (1 - 5)

Capt Marvel (1 - 5)

5 Feet Apart (.25 - 1 showing) - lost .75 screen

Wonder Park (had to be kept b/c of poor Missing Link presales and our area spring break starts this weekend (.75 - 3) - lost .5 screen

Gone - The Beach Bum, HTTYD 3 (so they picked WP over this for the break)

Local sets for this week - aka PRE-ENDGAME!

So, last week's NEW movies are already feeling fallout from the tight theaters at my Regal...it's gonna be a bloodbath next weekend (I'm pretty sure most of the booked openers are not getting "guaranteed" next weekend, if some of last week's openers didn't:)...also, the Cinemark theater did not book every new movie this weekend...

Cinemark 12

NEW

Curse of La Llorona (1 - 6 showings) (biggest size)

Penguins (1 - 5 showings) (smallest size)

TWO foreign films (2 - 4 showings each) (smallest size) - these are goners next week

RETURNING

Shazam (1 - 5 showings) (lost a screen, but kept a biggest size screen)

Hellboy (1 - 5 showings)

Little (1 - 5 showings)

Pet Semetary (1 - 5 showings)

Dumbo (1 - 5 showings)

Us (1 - 5 showings)

Capt Marvel (1 - 5 showings)

Missing Link (1 - 5 showings)

GONE

Best of Enemies (lasted 2 weeks), All previous foreign films (none held over - the 2 this week are new)

Regal 12

NEW

Curse of La Llorona (1 - 5 showings) (above average size)

Breakthrough (1 - 4 showings) (above average size)

Penguins (1 - 5 showings) (smallest size)

Returning

Hellboy (1 - 4 showings) (lost a showing by being on the "start late" clock)

Little (1 - 5 showings)

Missing Link (.5 - TWO showings (in it's 2nd weekend, it already lost a 1/2 screen - it's a goner next week and wasn't even protected for this 2nd weekend as a family movie - that's ROUGH)

After (1 - 5 showings)

Pet Semetary (1 - 5 showings)

Shazam (1 - 4 showings) (lost a screen, but kept the biggest size for the weekend)

Best of Enemies (.5 - 2 showings) (another predicted goner for next weekend)

Dumbo (1 - 5 showings)

Capt Marvel (1 - 4 showings)

Us (.6 - 3 showings) (this is gonna be a goner next weekend, too)

HTTYD 3 (.4 - 2 showings) (the last definite goner next weekend)

GONE

Five Feet Apart, Wonder Park

So, if I were to predict both theaters for Endgame weekend, right now, they each have 5 screens booked, but I think they'll go higher.

Cinemark will probably drop the foreign films for 2 screens, Pet Semetary, Us, and Missing Link for 5 screens - after that, it's gonna be tight, and I'd expect some screen sharing to get more screens (and if Penguins isn't protected, to become the Penguins/Endgame screen)...unless a holdover like Hellboy shows non-existent legs, which is likely...

Regal will probably drop Missing Link, Us, HTTYD3, and Best of Enemies as easy cuts for 2 screens...after that, I think After and Dumbo might go to get to 4 screens...and then it might be hard - I think Hellboy will be on the block but this theater does do male 12-45 movies really well...but I'll say it or Pet Semetary drops to get the 5.  Then, the question is, do they drop more or share more?:)  I guess we'll see...

Hellboy might be down to $5m this w/e which means with AEG covering the same demo it would be lucky to be making $2m that w/e.  So  yeah on the chopping block.

Dug around this thread around release week of Captain Marvel and found that 84,000 tickets sold on Pulse corresponded with about 3.9m in @Deep Wang numbers. So if Endgame was at 29.4 million on Friday then it should be ~33m today, should beat TFA and TLJ 36m by Friday, and assuming the Pulse multi drops to "only" equal to IW, should be about 48m by release

Hmm ok, in that case it would need to pick up the pace to be on course for a TFA-beating number (if your theater is representative)

Yea we will see what happens. I think with these show times they have right now, we can get to 3200-3300. If they would add some new times between 7pm - 9pm, we could hit that 50% increase. Just depends on what they decide to do.

EDIT: But to point out, if you use the % over IW as an average to apply nationally then we're looking at a $45m previews total right now. If we use Captain Marvel and apply it to the national average then we're looking at $51.5m right now. And again, this is right now. If we get to 3200 by 830pm next Wednesday, we're looking at something between $52m - $60m.

AMC Prime @ 2am, yes.

I believe if the 230am IMAX 3D was a regular 2D IMAX, it would be about the same but they always try to push the 3D when they can.
