That could be true or not, when those franchise started in the early 2000's, I'm not even sure they got China release, it was certain that those movie would get sequels only if they did well domestic.

What happen with Warcraft and resident evil could be an indication if Intl only franchise from US studio has some reality on it, or if it is not the time yet (they need to build some China Netflix or other ancillary better base for it to become reality).

It probably need 5 years more.......

Edge of Tomorrow and Star Trek Beyond were both flops. I think the only reason they didn't garner articles like Tarzan and The Mummy did is because the reviews were decent to good.

People love to use "flops" to describe any movie that loses money, but that's not really the definition. A flop is something that loses a sensational amount of money. It ruins careers. Sometimes -- rarely -- it even would bankrupt a studio. A franchise movie that loses some money -- but will likely be a helpful piece in a studio's library -- isn't a flop.

Neither was a flop they underperformed but sheesh quit using a word that doesn't belong.

So Tarzan wasn't a flop either? It's budget was only 20mil higher than Star Trek Beyond and comparable to Edge and yet people act like it's impossible that it made money post it's theatrical Revenue.

LOL old timer get a pass.... oh wait what am I doing :D

I just find it funny that this was the film that behaves like normal but folks expected to buck a trend. Good thing I didn't include it in my summer game unlike some other films (Baywatch and CU, I am looking at you!)

I had it in my summer game.

:kitschjob:

I thought it would perform like a mini-COMPTON. (This was well before the limited marketing and lousy reviews and reception, though.)

Looks like everyone's recovering from a suppressed Wednesday.

friday should looks good as no new major newcomers, and people started to turn their attention back to holdovers as TF5 fell short of expectation

EOT is the least deserving flop of recent years imo. Polar opposite of TF2.

A+ flop original with respected actors vs D- blockbuster sequel with young "actors".

If he is gonna dust of an oldie I would love for him to do an Alien franchise movie.

I'd like that as well, but I get the feeling Terminator is closer to his heart since he started it and did the first two. Which are the ones everyone loves anyway lol

Edge of Tomorrow will have a gross that is less than The Mummy on a bigger budget, yet I don't remember many articles about that one being a flop

There was plenty of discussion about Edge of Tomorrow's weak box office. Perhaps not as much as The Mummy, probably because a) EoT actually got good reviews and B) The Mummy is supposed to be the backbone of a huge franchise.

The latter is why EoT is getting a sequel, while if The Mummy ever gets a direct followup it will be through sheer inertia.

I don't think this is true. If it cracks 400m WW there'll be a sequel (and justifiably so).

I totally get why the domestic audience is looking at TF5 and Pirates and saying you know what we're good.  I just kind of wish something else stepped in for them.  Non-CBM

Ceasar and Nolan are coming. :insane:

Tarzan is so far from a flop that he is in too close to call to even know if the studio didn't made a profit out of it, same for Edge.

Flop is loosing a clear and large amount of money, it is Mars need mom, Ben-Hur, Live by Night, King Arthur, Monster Truck, etc... type of performance, that hurt a year slate.

Edge of Tomorrow (getting a sequel) is clearly out of that conversation, same for Tarzan.

POTC should manage 4.7-5.2 over the weekend for 159.5-160.

With dollar bump 170 is likely. That's 2.7x the 3-day ow (with inflated Sunday, so fair legs for a five-quel following probably the worst POTC in OST).

We all mostly knew POTC5 and TF5 were going to drop some domestically.

But for everyone on the planet to collectively give up on both franchises at the same time is just weird. :kitschjob:

Well both have kind of worn out their welcome.
