Girls Trip looking at a possible drop below 40% this weekend. Universal is having a really interesting year: their heavy hitter titles (Fifty Shades Darker, The Great Wall, The Fate of the Furious, The Mummy, Despicable Me 3) have either barely met expectations or really underperformed while their much more modestly budgeted titles (Split, Get Out, Girls Trip) have been big breakouts.

Furious 8 and DM3 are still huge hits worldwide. Furious feels like the domestic market is irrelevant at this point. If you can get a billion bucks overseas, who cares about domestic?

If people were smarter they would have let Emoji flop to send the studio a message.

Now SPA is going to release a dozen of these Emoji movies and turn it into their own LEGO movie franchise.

UGH.

stop

It would be fucked up Sony screwed with Nolan fans and made an ad flaunting Emoji's weekend win over Dunkirk.

That would be a shame.

  Reveal hidden contents

It would be hilarious

Sounds like Paramount's philosophy before TF5 belly flopped.

The Emoji movie having a little success will not cause the death of cinema.

LOL

Exactly.

That kind of "OMG, what a disgrace that this film that's not deep, important, or Oscar-buzz serious is succeeding!!" reaction is the epitome of movie snobbery. :D

It sends a message to studios that audiences will watch any animated movie no matter how bad it is. That studios will make money for not even trying.

That's VERY bad for cinema.

There are plenty of success stories of good movies doing good things this summer. Fucking Baby Driver man. It's still my favorite movie of the year and it's run is spectacular. Wonder Woman a superhero origin that really does a great job of creating it's character while also being an exploration of war? Yep. 400M+ Dunkirk, not my favorite movie but a godly director with all the freedom in the world and people show up.

The pessimism here is insane
