A potentially close race is shaping up at the North American box office, where new family animated film The Emoji Movie is battling Dunkirk for the No. 1 spot, ccording to early returns.

The Emoji Movie, from Sony Animated Pictures, is projected to earn $9 million-$10 million on Friday, including $900,000 in Thursday previews, for a weekend take of $26 million-$27 million despite withering reviews.

Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros.' World War II drama Dunkirk is expected to gross $8 million on its second Friday for a weekend haul of $26 million-$27 million. Box-office observers caution that the numbers could shift.

The Emoji Movie, based on the popular symbols used in text messages, centers on Gene (T.J. Miller) who, unlike the other inhabitants of Textpolis, has multiple expressions. Determined to be normal, he and his friends embark on an adventure to locate the code that will fix him, only to find themselves in a race to save the world

The ensemble voice cast includes James Corden, Anna Faris, Maya Rudolph, Steven Wright, Jennifer Coolidge, Jake T. Austin, Christina Aguilera, Sofia Vergara and Patrick Stewart. Emoji Moviecost $50 million to produce.

This weekend's other new nationwdie release is Charlize Theron's action pic Atomic Blonde, from Universal specialty label Focus Features and Sierra/Affinity. The film, following an MI6 spy during the final days of the Berlin Wall, kicked into gear with $1.5 million in Thursday previews.

Atomic Blonde is expected to earn $7 million-$8 million on Friday for a weekend debut in the $18 million-$20 million range.

David Leitch (John Wick) directed the film, which is based on the graphic novel The Coldest City. In addition to Theron, Atomic Blonde also stars James McAvoy, John Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan, Sofia Boutella and Toby Jones.

It’s still too close to call No. 1 with Sony Animation’s The Emoji Movie and Warner Bros.’ Dunkirk eyeing No. 1. Current estimates show Emoji Movie around  $24M with Dunkirk marching to the beat of $25M-$26M.

Analysts are still divided: Working in Dunkirk‘s favor are the PLFs, Imax and the Christopher Nolan halo, while Emoji could be impacted by heavy rain in New York city, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. That latter factor is what’s pushing down on higher weekend estimates for Emoji, not to mention its current Rotten Tomatoes rating is reading 3% off 30 reviews (Really? How bad is that rating for business? Some studio executives are of the mindset that a Rotten Tomatoes rating shouldn’t even be published until 50 reviews are collected). Should Emoji get to $10M today, it could push it past Dunkirk for the weekend, which is currently looking at a second Friday of $8M.

Dunkirk ‘s second weekend is -50% and is expected to crack the century mark at the domestic B.O.

Meanwhile, despite its great Thursday night start with $1.5M, Focus Features/Sierra-Affinity’s Atomic Blonde is showing some wear and tear on her boots with a lower than expected three-day of $18M-$20M after a $7.5M Friday. There’s a chance it could take off.  Despite all the kickass clips being toured around at CinemaCon and Comic-Con, some say this film has an arthouse story pace to it, which can keep some moviegoers away.

Universal’s Girls Trip is looking at $5M in its second Friday for a second weekend of $15.5M, -50% for a running 10-day take of $60.9M.

C'MOOOON Dunkirk #1 again.

Definitely a worse than expected drop for GT imo. I guess the intended audience rushed out much more than expected (but I definitely anticipate an improvement on the number as the weekend goes along).

EDIT: Dammit, you guys beat me to it :sadben:

I think that its not. I am not referring to my personal taste. I am just saying that it could have been potentially appealing to a wide audience had the execution been decent!!!!

It might still appeal to a wide audience even if it isn't...an opening approaching $30M and the possibility of legging to $100M DOM would be a huge success for a $50M movie...

I think this is a smart strategy by studios if they really want to put pressure on RT

Anyway, I don't see the Emoji estimates rising, it doesn't seem like a movie which will get great foot traffic from audiences in the evening where as Dunkirk and Atomic Blonde most likely will.

We''ll have to wait for what the reception would be like. 100m would be great obviously.

Obviously very early... And it's Deadline after all.

I am personally rooting for Emoji to win the weekend for the shake of my casino points and the meltdowns that will follow from the nolanites.

I only need Dunkirk to lose the weekend and not get to 27.75 for my Casino points...so those are my personal rooting points.  Since Atomic Blonde fell by the wayside (apparently), my hopes have to be pinned on Emoji (and on AB to keep pulling Dunkirk viewers away since it's the same males age 25+ demo:)...

Deadline estimates this early cant be more irrelevant. No real data, just projections from midnights and last weekend numbers. I cant believe there's still people here taking them seriously. Bring the almighty asgardian and fuck deadline.
