Detroit from Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow is looking at around $3M today for a wide debut that’s within an estimated $7M-$10M.  

Aviron Pictures’ Kidnap according to industry estimates is at $3.3M today for a $8.5M opening.

Focus Features/Sierra Affinity’s Atomic Blonde is eyeing $2.5M in its second Friday for a second three-day that’s between $7.5M-$9.5M, -53% for a 10-day of $35.3M.

20th Century Fox’s War for the Planet of the Apes is at $1.5M in its fourth Friday, and $5.2M over three, -51% with a running total of $129.4M.

These are some extremely shitty numbers for the openers as well as the holdovers. God save the box office throughout August.

 

The opener numbers are expected, but looks like the overall malaise has set in to the entire box office based on holdover numbers. People abandoning the multiplex. When was the last weekend we didn't have any movie cracking 10M on any day of the weekend? Probably the weekend before Guardians 2 I would venture to guess.

Yeah 4m is not happening. 4.5 seems like the minimum to me.

 

4m would be less than STB's increase last year with Suicide Squad opening.

If EMOJI is at 4m Friday, it's not doing only 10 (-59%) over the weekend.

 

Even, conservatively :

 

4 + 4.8 (+20%) + 3.2 (-33%) = 12 (-51%)

Malaise will end next weekend if there's a generic "all movie" Fandango or Atom code...people will head in for $5-8/ticket, even if they might see a sub-par-ish movie.  People don't want to pull the trigger for $10-$13+ for the same type of movie...

 

Happened in April when the online code fight went away then (and we wondered why was March so awesome and then April not)...it will happen again this August if the codes are gone for good til the holidays b/c non-event films plus full price tickets is not a winning combo for big numbers...
