How do I vote?

For best picture, you make a preferential ranking (your most favorite being #1, your least favorite being #10, and so on, and so forth), and for all of the other categories, you choose a winner and a runner-up. Then send that whole ballot to both @The Shape of Pasta and @The Mad Panda through private messaging. The nominations can be found on the first page of this thread.

I think Star Wars: The Last Jedi has the best technical stuff for a Star Wars movie thus far.  Because of this, it might be the first Star Wars movie to win an Academy Award since Jedi (83)

It's been that long?!

:ohmygod:

(Well, when I think about it, I guess I'm not too surprised 1-3, 7, and Rogue One couldn't manage it.)

Phantom Menace would have been a shoo-in for Visual Effects were it not for The Matrix, and there were still people predicting it to win on Oscar night. And - hot take incoming - you could make a pretty solid argument that Phantom Menace's effects have held up better in the 18 years since.

Could you. Could you make that argument.

Eeeeep. Yeah, I can't buy that even as a contrarian argument. Some of TPM's VFX have held up fine, a fair amount haven't, and THE MATRIX not only holds up great, but single-handedly changed VFX in general (somewhat like ANH did, way back in the day). I think almost all VFX artists would agree -- heck, I know ILM guys who worked on TPM and they agree.

Oh yeah, I'll agree that The Matrix deserved the win and was way more revolutionary for its time, but some of the CGI looks dated in a way that Phantom Menace's largely doesn't.

Have you seen TPM lately? The ships and vehicles look great. Anything CG related (with the possible exception of Sebulba) looks pretty dire.
