Ah yes AoU, I knew someone was gonna bring it up and it is surprising that that movie has to be explained. 

 

Whether you believe it or not but the fight did have an effect on Saturday as all data points to it. 

 

- of all Marvel movies that opened at the same time AoU had the smallest Sunday drop. Only Avengers 1 is close behind at 18% and even then that fell 70% more than AoU despite far better WoM. All the other 3 Marvel movies had a drop ranging from 24 to 31%

 

- Even looking at other 200m openers it is evident that AoU’s Sunday drop is very good. JW fell 18% same as Avengers. BP fell 9% depite being buoyed by holiday Monday and unpredictable WoM. Even the juggernaut TFA fell more than AoU (albiet only slightly more)

 

- So if you think that the fight did not effect its Saturday then you must think that it would be due to very bad WoM or it would be extremely frontloaded. But then it suddenly developed out of this world WoM (to the wxtent of being better than any big movie around it) and extreme backloadedness on Sunday?

Realistically I'm expecting $72-75M for Saturday but some crazy ass out of the blue $80M estimates would make for a truly exciting weekend here.
