The Last Duel - Ridley Scott, Matt Damon & Adam Driver | October 15, 2021

Recommended Posts

This is, what, the eighth, ninth, film announced to be directed by Ridley Scott in the past 3 years?

  • The Prisoner
  • Wraiths of the Broken Land
  • All The Money In The World
  • The Merlin Saga
  • Queen & Country
  • It's What I Do
  • Gladiator 2
  • Alien: Covenant sequel
  • The Last Duel

Of all of these, only 1 of them has actually happened. I swear to God, he's got ADHD or something.

Disaster in the making. Neither Matt nor Ben fit in a period piece movie let alone a French one!!! Just can't see them doing the accent.

14th century France based movie.... does not need a French accent.

A bit sceptical about the casting details as well

So Fox/Disney has rights to this currently. Wonder if they’ll pass it up. It doesn’t sound like a Disney movie at all n

But it might sound like a Fox movie.

He has never been better than in Shakespeare in Love.

Out of the link:

Quote

The main characters are the Norman knight Jean de Carrouges and the squire Jacques Le Gris. They were friends. One goes to war and returns to accuse Le Gris of raping his wife Margerite de Carrouges. No one will believe the woman, and the soldier appeals to the king of France to undo a decision handed down by Count Pierre d’Anencon, which favored Le Gris. The decision handed down is that the two men fight a duel to the death. The one left alive would be declared the winner as a sign of God’s will. And if Jean de Carrouges loses, his wife will be burned at the stake for punishment for her false accusation.

The script is almost done, written by Damon, Affleck and Nicole Holofcener, the Oscar-nominated writer and director.

I can see them in a Western or Civil War movie, but go back much farther then the 19th century and Yeah, I just can't see them pulling it off.

It's been pointed out that Scott's delaying his Merlin Saga film because of this one. Merlin was meant to start production this autumn. The script for this film is reportedly almost finished.

Is it possible that this could actually start shooting this year? As far as I know, Damon and Affleck don't have anything in their schedules for this year, so it could start shooting in September/October if they get everything ready in time.

Matt and Ben reunited onscreen? Great! Not Striking Vipers: The Movie? Alas...

Rape as a plot device? Groundbreaking.

These two could do anything they want and they choose a story that sounds this awful and ridiculous? How dreadful.

Hoping there is some nuance beyond the plot summary because it really does sound like a story where a woman is raped (allegedly?) but it's primarily about the effect on the men and how they deal with it. Nicole Holofcener being involved with the script gives me some optimism that the movie won't be as regressive as it seems, but I am wary. I also feel like the media will come in with knives sharpened when it's released given the subject matter, and with the people involved? Can already picture Ridley not giving a f--- and loudly saying so, while Matt explains why men being at the forefront of a story like this is actually very feminist!  Prayers up in advance to the reps and studio shills, for the fires they are going to have to put out.

Maybe this will all turn out well, but even beyond the plot, Matt and Ben as medieval French Knights? Yeah...
